Looking like a good gun for a 16 year old. Never owned one.

I had one in pink camo for my daughter in the OBs most hated caliber 243. That lil gun shot sub 1in and killed several deer with no tracking dog required.
I have never met a single person that had one that didn’t shoot.

Why not a 308? More plentiful ammo. All the gun you need for whitetail in the South.

I bought one 12 years ago as a Christmas gift for my then 7 year old son for his first rifle. It's a youth model .243. We sighted it in the morning we bought it and he killed his first buck with it that evening.

He went on to shoot many more deer over the years and it never let him down. That buck is hanging on my wall and the gun is in my safe. That little Savage will never be sold and I've recommended it to many people over the years.

Good choice dad.

My 18 year old hunts with an Axis XP 7MM-08. it is a decent shooting gun for the price.

Got one last year to have as I now have three hunters here. It has killed 5 deer and is one of the best feeling rifles I have shouldered. Put the little cheap Leupold in 3x9 on it and it looks great. Shooting the Barnes vortex in 7mm08 out of it and it has performed perfectly, just how I like, a nice expansion and big exit so I can track em in this pine straw if they dont drop

I have a savage xp in 30-06. Shoots like a dream. The fit an finish is far from perfect but it is a better shot than me so no complaints.

have one in 7mm-08 for the kids and one in .270. I put some tape on the grip areas because the plastic stock feels cheap. Also you have to work the action a lot to get it to loosen up, get smoother. Both mine did eventually.

As far as hunting they have both have several bodies on them. Perform very well and are more accurate than I can shoot.

The safety on mine is a little weird, I would prefer a nice clean click, but it is kind of mushy, I catch myself checking it often.

I've noticed that also. Not a problem necessarily But I do check it also.

Yeah I just pulled it out to see. It is when you are putting it back on safety. It clicks fine taking it off.

I have one chambered in 308 paired with a Vortex 3-12x42 and it's absolutely my favorite hunting rifle. Very accurate. One of the better triggers I've ever had on a stock rifle.

They are good shooting weapons. Between my brothers and I we own the Savage Axis , the Ruger American and the Mossberg Patriot. all in 308.Puircahsed them for the younger hunters in our group. All have done the job well. I lean towards the Patriot because it is a wooden stocked gun and I prefer that.
