Got a TISAS 1911 for $400 back in January. Really like it...accurate and no hiccups.

As much as I hate to say it, if I was spending that little on a sidearm, I would buy a polymer. 1911s weren't meant to be "cheap".
I have the Remington 1911. I like it for what it is, but my Colt is a finer weapon. The Ruger is a great entry level 1911 when you can find it. Both are about 200 more then what you are looking to spend.

And as to some others posting, I think the Remington is on par with the Ruger given that you get the R1 enhanced. A standard GI setup should never be compared to a more modernized version because the modern one will always win out, even if John Browning didn't invent the extras (beavertail, skeleton hammer, novak sights, etc.).

I'd get a Rock Island and never look back. They are good guns. Most of the differences are about refinements and not function. Many of the things people gripe about are just the way things are on any barebones 1911. Some people just don't like basic 1911s and think they have to be improved with various features. Even so, Rock Island makes some models with those features as well for considerably less than other places.
And if you don't want to take my word for it, read this:

LSULEFTY,
There are some good, albeit not fancy, 1911's in that price range, although you'll prolly have a VERY hard time finding them. For <$500, you'll be looking at a foreign made 1911, either from The Philippines or Turkey.
RIA and Citadel are made in The Philippines by Armscor. I don't have an RIA, but I do have a 1911 Citadel Compact. My Citadel has been a reliable gun, especially for the entry level price I got it. I've enjoyed mine and would buy another one. I also have a 1911 Commander made by American Classic. A/C's are made in the Philippines by MetroArms. Like RIA/Citadel, the A/C's are nicely priced. The A/C's have a pretty blued finish while RIA/Citadel are Parkerized. Both guns are part of my cocnealed carry rotation. ATI's 1911's are also made in The Philippines, but from a third company (I believe the company's name is SAM.)
From my reading on the 'net, it seems like Armscor and Metro Arms both have pretty good reputions for both quality guns and customer service, but ATI seems to lag behind a little. The Turkish made gun referenced by a previous poster has good reviews on Bud's, but not much on the 'net otherwise since the gun's pretty new.
When comparing prices for 1911's made by different companies, be sure you compare similar guns. For example, be careful comparing the price of an "enhanced" American Classic (beavertail safety grip, target trigger, target hammer, lowered ejection port, extended thumb safety, high profile Novak type sights, etc) against a "basic" model that doesn't have the additional features.
Lots of good 1911 specific info, especially for the less well known brands, at these sites.

Good luck w/ your shopping. Let us know what you buy (and include PICS!).
ETA: Regent is another brand of 1911's made in Turkey. I've seen some Regents at some of the Academy's.

Save some more money and go with the Ruger or Remington. I have never shot the Ruger but my buddy has the Remington and its a fine gun. Or go with the Springfield Mil Spec, can't go wrong there.

What is a US government Colt 1911 worth? Like it says "US Government" on the side. Don't ask questions.

Depends on a lot of factors.
Date manufactured? M1911 or M1911A1? Condition?
Could be anywhere from 500-3000.

Somewhere around 60's or 70's.

Condition?
Pristine. Has original grips and a nice set of mahogany grips.
I'll take a pic next time I'm around it.
