My 13 year old son wants to start hunting by himself and I don’t really want him trying to climb a tree stand yet. They are expensive but will be willing to pay if they are worth it.

13 yr olds should be more than capable of climbing a ladder stand. Unless they have a physical disability which in that case totally understand.

With that being said some just don’t like heights and that’s cool.
I would suggest buying a big “roomy” pop up blind and a Caldwell Field Pod for a rest. Hard to beat

I've used one quite a bit in thickets over a regular blind. Works like a charm but you are ground level so wind is a huge factor. It's not heavy at all but it's bulky and they're not very durable so not something I would leave out. Kind of a pain in the arse to carry if and a bow but it works really well. I've gotten within 10 yards of plenty of deer and they never saw me

The extenders are a must especially if your gonna use a bow

Also get some clear plastic bumps and put on it so they don't rub together and scratch

Second this, if he's going to be on the ground. How about a short ladder stand?

Are these a thing? Hard to find anything below 15’ but where I hunt, 10’ is about perfect. High enough to see over the ground brush but going higher ends up with limbs being in the way and its federal land so can’t cut shooting lanes. So I just use a climber, but it’d be nice to be able to leave a stand out and not have to pack in/out every trip

I bought one of the Primos 3 panel ground blind this season for me and my 11yr old to sit on the edge of a gas line. Not very heavy, easy to carry. Primos has an open box sale right now on them.

Most ladder stands are in pieces, you can just not add a piece of ladder. But yes, you can find short ladder stands also.

A 6-10 ft ladder stand would be a great first stand for a kid. Teach them to wait to load the gun until in the stand, get off the ground, etc. I love to hunt high but just getting off the ground can go a long ways.

I bought one before last season. I had more fun with it than I have in a long time hunting. It was hilarious how close I had deer come up to me. Had a turkey hen almost start pecking her own image in the mirror. Not heavy, easy to set up. But get the carrying case. Makes it so easy to pack in and out.

They work great, especially for turkey but for deer too

Haven't looked for one, but that's what I started with 20+ yrs ago. It was about 6ft off the ground. As mentioned, most are in pieces, so you could leave a section off or cut off some length if needed.

Mine was in lock ons, ladder stands, and climbers by himself at that age. Depends on his size and strength, and most importantly, maturity.

I think I had climbed every tree within a mile of my house by the time I was six.

I have a Primos blind.
Your son will like it but he is going to want to be up in the tree.

Man times have changed. When I was 10 my dad and uncle sent me up a 25 foot ladder stand that was literally a ladder and a 2x2 piece of plywood attached to sit on, handed me a .300 and said, “stay here and if you see anything, shoot. Don’t get down until you see our headlights coming back.”
