Anyone build a bat house?

Do they help with mosquitoes?
How much do they shite?
I plan on building these near my garden for some added fertilizer.

stuff is supposed to be gold for gardens add that to the benefit of chemical free mosquito control?
not sure why everyone doesn't build one
we had 2 bats sleeping in our closed patio umbrella this weekend, which is what kinda peaked my interest

I have no idea about the guano...but I know those little flying rats can flat take care of some mosquitoes. I don't have any La State birds flying around my house. We have gray bats near us and every summer evening they are flying about...the flying insects are really at a minimum due to them. I love 'em.

I haven't made one because when I researched it I would have to put it right next to my house to get the recommended amount of sun. From the way it sounds I wouldn't have a problem with the guano but the ammonia from the urine is extremely potent. If you have a good method of cleaning up the area under the house routinely it might not be that bad.

Have built a few and as long as they are out 20 or 30 yards or so you wont notice the smell. Most of ours were placed pretty high though.

I was given one a while back. I just mounted it to a tree at the back corner of my yard yesterday. I read that spring is when they come out and start looking for nesting spots.

If they eat mosquito hawks as well as mosquitos, sign me up for 50 bats. Those little bastards are killing my staining and polyurethane projects.

We were going to as a way to keep them out of other structures, the ones you order are too cheap to bother building from scratch. They need to be a certain height too.
Don't know that I'd ask to have them around, once they find a spot you don't want them in they can be a pain.

I've built a few. They work great if you don't mind getting buzzed by them in the early morning/dusk times, and are in an area with bats. Paint it black, and face it towards the east with a clear view of the morning sun. Those little dudes will put a hurt on any flying insects you have out at night. I can walk around in my yard at night without a single mosquito bite.
Plus it's fun as hell letting my daughter throw acorns up in the air, and watching them flock to it.

I live in a subdivision with woods behind my house and there must have been a nest of them there because we would always see them in the evening hours. They will get what seems like inches away from your head and make you scream and run like a girl with arms flailing and everything but they won't touch you. At least thats what I read. They use radar like ways to fly and they'll get close but since they know they can't eat you won't touch you. Only bad thing about them was when there would be a hard rain we would find some under our porch, in the outside umbrella etc. The rain messes with their ability to detect sound locations of things and basically become disoriented.

Yup, they will have you running until you realize they won't hit you. Even if they do they won't do anything to you.

I've built a few for others but I haven't put one up for myself yet. I am wanting to build a chimney swift tower this year near where I hunt to help with mosquitoes during bow season (during the migration so could have a few hundred roosting in the tower).
