If you are doing a lot of hay I have a cousin who has developed a rake that you can pull a baler behind and bale in one pass. Pretty neat concept. Here is their website if you are interested. Flex rake

Love to know where they are giving these horses away. I can't find a decent roping horse for under 5 or 6k

Plenty to be had for cheap. Well bred ones. Not trained.

Well there's your problem

Exactly. I've heard so many people talking about how cheap horses are but can't find anything to rope off of. I damn sure done have to time to get steers and train or even finish one.

When you buy a finished horse for whatever event. You are paying for the training. Good breeding adds a little.

I've bought and sold my share. Sold out a few years ago but starting to have withdraws. After I sold out I had enough friends still in it so when I had the craving I could just use one of their mounts. Last man standing just moved to Tenn so gotta bite the bullet I guess

so the boards opinion is that i should go with the round bales?? just did some calculations. based on google results on "how many square / round bales of hay per acre". average for square is 75 and @ $8 bale = $600. average for round is 32 and @ $55 bale = 1760. winner winner chicken dinner

Those must be really small round bales. Normally 15 squares per round
Square=45-60#
Round =700-800 4'x6 bales
And you may not get $55 per round. $8 per square if it's in your barn or delivered. Less if they pick up in the field. Pick up in field is better then you don't need a barn or have to touch them.
Eta- maybe more like 12 squares per round

You do not want to deal with square bales if you don't have to. Trust me.
Posted on 6/27/12 at 9:20 pm to Tigerhaven03
You will make less per acre with rounds but gain speed of baling and round balers won't break down nearly as much as square balers.
Square balers have 5 gagillion moving parts. Round balers have ten.

Round bales you cut today bale tomorrow
Square bales you cut today bale two or three days from now
Round balers bale as fast as you can
Square balers molasses drive

frick a square bale.
I am always amazed at square balers. What kind of evil genius figured out how to tie a knot in less than a second with gears and metal.
It should be the 8th wonder of the modern world.

You really should have both if you have 1000 acres of alicia bermuda. The round baler for speed and square baler to sell out of the field and put a 1000 or so in the barn and sell for top dollar.
