Any Texas Public Land Hunters?

I’ve been looking into it a lot lately and have always been very curious about the hunt quality and safety, among other things. I always think to myself that there is so much public land, why don’t I just plan a hunt and go?

I know there are a lot of public acres to find in Texas. But, I haven’t done it in years. That was a two day bird hunt near Abilene which went pretty well.

Is deer season really crowded? Is safety a concern? By safety I mean from other hunters. What kind of bucks do people usually harvest?

Just wondering. I don’t know a lot about outside of the fish and wildlife website.

Thanks!

While percentage wise they don't have much, even 2% of TX is a lot of land. There is definitely public land out there to hunt if you want to find it.

I lived in DFW for the past 2 years and squirrel and duck hunted on public land. Minimal other hunting pressure.

Deer hunting is a little different animal, but there are good deer out there. I would avoid opening weekend of modern firearms on public land (which I do in LA as well fwiw) but otherwise the crowding won't be as bad as you imagine. Wear your orange and walk in further than you think you need to.

And hunt on weekdays.

General gospel of public land hunting.

Anyone know about Anahauc NWR? There is decent duck hunting to the east and west of Houston so it would make sense this would hold ducks. Not to mention the trinity river delta is there and the trinity had a small flyaway on it.

Ducks-

Anahuac NWR... been hunting it all my life. There is a walk in area that is hit or miss like everything else. Also the farther you walk the better. Better public hunting is by boat down off onion bayou in Anahuac. Need a boat to get to a ton of saltwater/tidal flats in the marsh.

Old & Lost River off of I-10 not far from Anauack Once again you need a boat. You can pull a permit before season and put in a blind that is your blind all season. No squatters.

A bit further back toward Sabine is JD Murphy hunting area close to Port Arthur. Need a boat. First come first served.

Down between Sabine Pass and High Island is McFadden Wildlife Refuge. Good hunting there. They have walk in areas and plenty of boat in areas from several launches spread out over 25 miles. Check in and Check out at one location regardless of where you launch. I think they do some reservations for walk in areas off the beach highway entrance. It's a hump to some of them on foot but the first 2/3 of the hump are on cattle trails that are pretty hard.

If you head south out of Sabine on the left is Texas Point. It's walk in only. Once again a bit of a hump but plenty of room. Duck hunting can be good there.

Good luck.

Thanks for the info, if I don't get in a lease/club next year I may have to try them out.

hunted public land south of dallas for dove. most land is not huntable but occasionally a place is ok. no pressure from other hunters. there was one place by kaufman that came open after the release of public lands. 900 acres and was great dove hunting. we also killed geese. not available the next year.

I hunt the small dove fields near Austin, and have gone up the Limestone County for deer. Have had success, just be careful. If things don't feel right, they're probably not right.

All of those public land duck spots you posted are not for the faint of heart. Can you kill on them? Yes, but you better be pretty mad at them to do it and have a damn good boat. A good dog helps too.

That there are a lot of dumbasses walking around those small deer leases with high powered rifles. I've left early before because some of they will walk right up to you in prime shooting time.

Lot of corps of engineers land around lakes. Also most lakes allow duck hunting if not full of homes.

I wouldn’t hunt public land for deer unless it is bow only. But then again I don’t bow hunt

Does any of it have hard walkable bottoms or is it sink up to your tits like in LA?

Is most of it as crowded as LA public land?

I am on the west side if Houston so I doubt venture out that way but I am getting the itch for ducks again bad. I begrudgingly quit some years back except for a few trips here and there.

I think the Aggie dude in this thread may have better intell than me but I hunted Anahuac back in the day. Back then, you basically showed up the evening before and slept in your car to get into the refuge the next morning for the walk in area. Access was an absolute nightmare. Yes, the bottoms sucked and the best holes were of course the farthest walk. Like I said, you will hate life making those death marches. If you are on the Westside I would maybe look into the public hunting scene down near Freeport and Rockport or the old Justin Hurst WMA. You will need a boat to hunt down near the coast though. Justin Hurst is walk in.

I have a duck/marsh boat, 18ft with 70HP, I will check the Free/Rock port area. Wasn't aware of any public land down there.

Thanks

Justin Hurst still get in line the night before and sleep in your truck for the walk in section?

Most of the people I know that have success on the coast are using airboats and are going beyond where the pro drives and mudboats are hunting.

Most of the barrier islands and coast is open for public duck hunting but requires a decent boat as crossing the bay with a north wind can be dangerous. I hunt in the Port O’Connor area with a few guys but there are a few weekends where no one is available. I’m open to joining up and showing you the ropes.
