Just picked up a Ruger American Ranch in 300 BLK, have a Sightmark Photon RT I’m going to mount on it. This will be for within 150 yards in late afternoon and at night for coyotes and hogs.

May even try to shoot a deer with it as it’s able to record like a camcorder. I’ve ordered the Hornady 190 subs, and Lehigh Defense 194 Maximum Expansion. This gun is gonna stay sub-sonic, and these 2 rounds after much research seem to be the best hunting options.

Anyone here actually took a deer or a hog with subs?

Preciate any and all info. I’ve killed 100s of deer and hogs in my life, this just seems like a cool setup to do it quietly.

Preciate any and all comments

I shot a buck last hunting season with a Ruger American predator 308 with subsonic Becks ammo. The deer was at 100 yards and he only took 20 steps. I dont think i would shoot at one over 100 yards with subsonic ammo though.
My rifle is suppressed and if you want to hear something that will put a grin on your face go find somebody that has one and shoot it. You can hear the firing pin drop and the bullet hit the deer. It is unreal how quiet a suppressed subsonic 308 can be.

IMO of I was hunting deer subsonic I'd want something at least .45 caliber. That .300 oughta do fine within 100 yards with a really good bullet though.

Now for shooting nuisance shite it's a different story. You just need to be able to hit it.

Yea I get it. Still gonna pack my 30-06 Tikka with the Zeiss 3x15x50 for most of the action. Just figured I’d pack this little setup with me to Incase I want to stay late and pop a hog or yote after dark.

Hornady and Lehigh Defense make Subs that expand at 900’ per second. Just seems like a cool setup to try something different one afternoon.

I have taken a few hogs with a 300 blk out with subs. the hogs have all been within 100 yds. I think the furthest one ran was about 50 yds. I was using the Hornady 190 gr subs as well. One of the hogs I shoot the bullet went through both shoulder plates.

It oughta work fine. Idk if I like the Lehigh enough to try them or not. I've been looking at their pistol stuff because it's nice and warm

As others have said, be aware the round won’t be as effective as a supersonic round. Think of subsonic 300 as a 45 ACP with a very pointy bullet - they have about the same weight and muzzle velocity, one will just have a slightly different wound trajectory.

This is what you want for subsonic hunting:

Discreet Ballistics

That being said, I doubt I'd take a shot at a deer more than 100 yds. Mine is zeroed at 50yds. Subs drop off really fast past 100yds.

Also, what suppressor are you running?

While I hate waiting for new things to come out, I’m interested in the 8.6 round Q is developing with Hornady

Seen it. It’s a 6.5 Creedmoor shortened and necked down (just like the 300blk).

Barrel twist is incredibly fast at 1:3 if I remember right.

Going to be really interesting round.

aint gonna have much power left out at 150 yds, when it's only got 500 or so ft lbs at the muzzle, so at 150m, it's going to hit no harder than a 9mm pistol does at 10m, and it's not gong to expand any sort of spitzer rifle bullet at 800 fps, either. So, only brain or spine hits are likely to keep the hogs and deer. from running off 100m or so before they bleed out. Acceptable vs human enemies, and maybe on vermin hogs, but not on game like deer,

THIS is what's called for.
