I've brought mine several times but never had a comfortable shot. I figured out the way to get a doe in handgun range on a doe day is to leave the handgun at the camp.

I have a TC Contender with a 12" barrel in 7-30 waters. It's a 30-30 necked down to .28. I have killed a few with it over the years. Nothing big or over 100 yds.

I have a TC Encore with an 8 inch 300 Whisper barrel. It is a down right deer slayer. Have killed numerous deer up to about 100 yards. I load lighter bullets up to about 30-30 performance. Hoot to shoot w subsonics too.

I've deer hunted exclusively w/ handguns for 20 years or so. Most folks wouldn't call them pistols, but the ATF calls them handguns. My handguns are single shots w/ long barrels and scopes. I started w/ a 44 Mag Redhawk, but it just wasn't accurate enough. I then moved to the T/C Contender platform. With the Contender I killed deer using barrels w/ non-factory calibers from 6 mm to 375. The last 5 years or so I've been using bolt action handguns, Remington XP-100's and a Savage Striker. I killed more deer w/ a 6.5 JDJ Contender, but the past few years I've been using mostly a 7-08 and a 284 Win. I admire anyone who hunts game w/ a traditional handgun. Mine aren't as challenging as a traditional handgun as my handguns are more accurate and shoot much flatter than revolvers. Nevertheless, they do add an extra challenge to the sport. I also use bolt action pistols on prairie dog hunts. If anyone's looking for an extra challenge in their deer hunting and they already have a T/C Encore, get a handgun barrel (7-08 would be a good one to start with) and put a 2-7X handgunscope on it. The most difficult part of the game is learning to use the scope. In addition, one needs a good rest. Try it out....you might find you like it.

Thx for the kind words.
All of my longest shots were actually w/ the 6.5 JDJ (ballistically about like a 6.5 Grendel) in the T/C Contender. The mule deer and doe antelope were taken from prone position using a bipod on the front and a backpack at the rear. With the buck antelope, I placed my backpack on a chest high rock for a rest. This was loooong before the days of modern laser rangefinders. I used a "Rangematic" range finder. Worked kind of like the focus on a SLR camera. Turn a dial until the target was in focus and lined up, then read the range the dial. Crude and big, but effective.
Mule deer in NM at 325 yds. I caught a gust of wind so the bullet hit too far back. Snuck up to about 175 yds distant and took final shoot off my backpack.
Pronghorn antelope doe in WY: 275 yards. Same hunt as the pronghorn buck.
Pronghorn antelope buck in WY: 225 yards.
My closest shot was the above pictured buck w/ 284 Win.....40 yds.
The key is to have a good rest, knowing the distance and knowing your gun's trajectory. Summertime prairie dog hunts are great practice for deer season.

By shear luck I’ve killed a small 4 Pt with a 357 Mag at approx 7 yards. Rifle unloaded in case after morning hunt. 357 mag in the truck door. Little buck walks out to cross the trail. Right time wrong place for him. Clean head shot. Still crazy when I think back about it.

What common manufacturer and barrel length would you suggest for a beginner.... probably sticking to 50yd shots in the woods?
