I have a female shepherd and she's been a great dog. She is very protective of my wife and now my 3 month old son. they get along great and she is very good with my other two dogs as well. her and my lab play all the time together in the yard and end up exhausted. as for shedding it is very bad but you get used to sweeping and vacuuming a lot. I would own another one in heartbeat! they are fantastic dogs!
We got her from the sanders in Ponchatoula. they have two very good blood lined dogs they breed. I'm not sure if they still breed them but I'm sure he can point you to the right people.

There are a few good bloodlines in Louisiana, but for the most part any pups will be unobtainable. We managed to get daughter of Cuba V from a local breeder/trainer. As has already been stated, if you want top quality, be prepared to pay up. There are plenty of breeders out there. Get the sire/dame info and check their pedigrees as far back as you can to make sure they haven't crossed before.
Are you looking for the American version of the GSD or a working-line dog? You really need to focus on this and what the dog's drive will be. This is massively important as a high-drive dog can be more than a handful. Even the lower-drive dogs can be difficult and must be given a job or they can be very destructive.
CUBA V
Edit: Pics just because (Cuba's Daughter on the far right)

My only reservations is that I have a 1 and 3 year old and i'm worried about bites.
I have a less than 1 year old niece. They are incredibly protective of her. She comes into the house the sniff her out then kiss her head they might lay down next to her.

thanks man, they are a pain in my arse but I love them dogs. the lab is laid back and loves to hunt, the shepherd is lazy but will be the best protector you can have. the other a day a man walked to my back door and she went ape shite and ran him off. my wife had no idea what his intentions were but he never came back.

This one has western line dogs and is outside of Austin. She has some good looking dogs. GSD breeder 1
This is another breeder in the Austin Texas area that I have heard good things about, however I do not have first hand experience with their dogs.

I'm really not sure what kind of line I want/need. I want a dog that would be my 3-year old sons best friend. I want a dog that would eat someone's face off if they broke in and protect my wife and son at all costs. But I want a dog to have some fun with. A dog that I can train and play with. I don't want one that's just going to lay around. I want him to be interactive and communicative with the family. However, I don't want a dog that people will be afraid of. I want him to understand my cues, if someone is at the door, I want him to be the first responder, but when he knows I'm relaxed he relaxes. I know all of this comes from ALOT of training but I'm not opposed to putting in the work and maybe I'm asking too much of a dog. I basically want a good family dog that will deter any unwanted guests.

I have seen this with our family ones that we have bred at my parents property.
I have been overwhelmed with the excitement of having my first dog of my own that he is actually over protective around the home. He is only 14 months so I am working on reinforcing the cues of welcoming a guest that I am welcoming, but it can be done as long as you're not pushed over by that fluffy puppy fur and floppy ear stage.

I have a doberman, so it is like 1/10th German Shepard.

That's ok. A GSD by its mere presence will deter a lot of unwanted and a fair amount of wanted attention. They will bond to whomever they wish, though you can guide this to some extent. They will shake the house when anyone approaches, friend or foe.
If you get one, you must commit to socialization and obedience training. A good, solid, clear-headed GSD will accomplish much whereas failure to train can create a real danger.

My mom got a great one from the one of the German Shepard Rescues around Baton Rouge.
Mine came from the same rescue group out of BR. Doesn't protect for shite. I once walked in my backyard and founding him sitting on command and playing fetch with the A/C repair guys.
I seriously couldn't see myself ever owning a different breed of dog. He sheds plenty, but nothing routine bathing doesn't help control. Mine was 3 yrs old when my wife had out second child. My dog quickly processed the significance of the situation and understood he was the pet and the baby was not to be messed with. He routinely breaks that rule however by stealing and hiding the baby's toys.

does your homeowners insurance cover liability for a dog?

We shaved her in the summers, may have looked funny but she was much cooler.
I'm not sure about that. GS are double coated dogs. The undercoat not only insulates them, but also helps them cool off in heat. I wouldn't do that.
