Wife and I want to get one. Any reputable breeders in the south Louisiana area? Or any to order from nationwide? Anything I should know about them besides the typical pros cons you can find on the interwebs? Any other forums i can check out?

My aunt who has 3 daughters has had several. Great family pets, protective and intimidating to strangers. Downside seems to be health problems like a lot of pure breed big dogs.

There's one on Red Stick German Shpeherds facebook page that I would adopt if I already didn't have one. He's got a calm disposition which is the exact opposite of mine.

if you are spending the money WHY LIMIT YOURSELF with a breeder thats local that is stupid. find the best dog you can find and put it on a plane.

I had one while growing up, great dog. Very loyal and protective.

We shaved her in the summers, may have looked funny but she was much cooler. They shed and after the winter you will definitely have to brush them. They get an undercoat and when it falls out you will know. Should really brush them year round.

Ask or research about their hips, they have issues.

I wouldn't expect much past 10 years life expectancy. Not that the dog won't live that long, but vet bills could become an issue.

Just my experience. I don't remember the breader, ill have to see if i still have the paperwork.

My dad has one, my aunt does, and my grandma rescued one. They all bark A LOT, and can get over 6ft fences relatively easily

I have one. Super lovable dog.

I got her from a place in Mandeville. I don't think she breeds them anymore though.

VanRIch,

I am partial owners of a male and female that we have bred a couple times and own one from the second litter.

I would first figure out what kind of GSD you want. There are 4 major genetic lines each with their own body and personality characteristics (American Line, Western Line, Eastern Line, and Czech Line). There are two coat types that you might want to think about (long haired and "stock haired").
GSD are incredibly loyal and intelligent dogs. I have read they can have a vocabulary of 150+ words.

Have 3 of them, 2 males and a female. All are German imports and came from breeders in Colorado and Illinois. Great dogs but can be overly protective of family and house. There are no breeders in LA that I would buy a dog from, deep south for that matter. There are some really good ones around Dallas, Tenn, and altlanta though. You will have to pay some money to get one from a good healthy quality bloodline. Really good gsd forum is germanshepherds.com

Be glad to help with any questions you have, just let me know

Very loyal, very defensive of those they are close to. Having company can even be a problem.

Amazing animals, very smart. They pick up on owners cures and will astound you at times.

Did the breeders in Colorado and Illinois import them for you?

Actually the breeder of my two males flew their mom to Germany to breed then back home to have the pups. Can't remember about my female, think it was her parents grandparents that came over from Germany.

I have one female. She is a great dog and very loving and protective of my son who is 13 months old. Try to get one as a puppy an socialize it from the beginning or else they will become overprotective and could cause problem with company. Mine never barks unless there is something to bark at or we are playing, but she has two distinct barks and you will know which one to pay attention to. They shed like crazy even with frequent brushing, and make sure there is no hip dysplaysa in the line you are looking at. My girl is half European and half Czech line and is larger than most females.

I've been wanting one for awhile. My only reservations is that I have a 1 and 3 year old and i'm worried about bites. I know its all about how u raise them. I'm sure the more expensive breeders have a better temperament of dogs

They are generally pretty accepting of children that they have grown up with. They can be a bit mouthy as puppies, but they are like labs and want to chew everything. My girl gets along great with my son trying to climb and pull on her, and she has never been an issue with my niece and nephew when they were younger. She is leery of children she does not know until properly introduced, but that has calmed down as she has gotten older. Just understand that they are herders by nature and will try to herd your children into an area that she thinks they should be. Where my son goes, she isn't too far behind him keeping an eye on him.
