So my daughter and I were watching Swamp People, one of the episodes about tagging out on the last day of the season. Daughter asks, what if you fill your last tag, but you still have three or four lines left to check, any or all of which may have an alligator on them? How is this handled she asks?

I had no answer, how does that work?

I suppose you just cut the line, but I have no idea.

have to assume that you better cut them loose. do not ever give mr green jeans a reason to sniff around.

also, "gasman".....have i seen you in the movies?

I'm guessing you better find someone with tags or figure out a way to get the gator off the line alive

the number of tags you get (partially) has to do with the amount of land you own/lease....or that is what i thought. meaning, getting tags from someone else is not a solution.

now i am curious....

The tags are specific to a piece of property or area. You just cut the line. Has happened to me before.

You're only allowed two lines per tag on the areas around us in NWLA, so as your tags dwindle, so should your lines.

thought so. we lease some marsh for duck hunting that is adjacent to property that we own, and the guy offered alligator tags for no additional money. plan on doing some gator hunting this year.

thanks, sir.

I had 3 tags several years back from WMA lottery program. We were allowed to set 2 lines per tag we had. Once you tagged out, you had to go pick up any remaining lines. If there was a gator on it, just cut the line. Hook will eventually rust out.

It was nothing like you see on Swamp People. Just slowly pull up the downed line and a 22 to the back of the neck and its over within a few seconds. All that thrashing around is because they intentionally agitate the gators for the TV cameras.

Yep, and just how hard can it be to pull up a gator when Troy has that cute petite gal "Pickle" with him doing most of the grunt work.

I've seen Troy and a couple other hunters get tags from other gator hunters who felt they couldn't fill their tags, but they hunted in the area the owner of the tags were allowed to hunt.

You cut the line....the enzymes in the gators belly will take care of the hook

be removed when an alligator hunter's quota is reached.

Shoot gators. Put in boat. Clean gators yourself. Profit.

Prices for gators are in the shitter, so no point in worrying with the skins. I’d kill them just to thin the herd and eat them myself or give the meat away.

Thanks guys, the two lines per tag makes sense. I just wonder how many alligators survive that have been cut loose with a big arse hook down their gullet.

I can confirm,,,I called a biologist friend of mine about that same question last week.. He said the rule is just cut them loose. Some will make it some won’t but that’s about all you can do. And you can set 2 lines per tag for lottery hunts. Not sure if that’s that same for commercial.
