I'll have the jaw cleaned of meat by tomorrow but wanted to see what our resident experts have to say about how old this one is. I know what it looked like on the hoof but I'm still new to this.

I have looked at a fair number of jaws and have never seen one quite like that. Holy shite that deer is super old.

I would say 7 or 8 but it wouldn’t shock me if he was older than that.

8.5+
I had a similar jaw bone last year and sent off a molar to be tested in a lab. Ended up being 14.5 years.

Younger then you would think by the teeth. It looks like it never had all it’s teeth causing intense wearing on the teeth it did have. Probably 3.5-4.5 if I just had to guess only on the teeth. They shouldn’t wear down like that, and should be pretty uniformed.

What was the weight/body condition?

I know old does dont get the same glory but she was the biggest menace on 2000 acres. I cant tell you how many new stands she's busted over the past 5 years.

I was beginning to think she had a broken neck with how much time she spent looking into trees. The 20 minutes she was within 30 yards have to have been some of the best hunting I've done. Killed her at 12 yards, and as a last FU she decided to die in the middle of deep ditch with chest high undercut banks. Took 4 hours from crawling out of the stand until loading her in the truck. 2+mile drag.

It does to me. I know the feeling. I had one like that on my hit list for 2 years. She was old and had a broken/floppy ear. She could sense a hunter’s presence despite all precautions taken. I could never get her in range. She still haunts me.

I decided to do a euro of her to use in my classroom. Once the jaw was cleaned up it was clear she had all her teeth at one point, the roots are there, it was just highly callused over where they are worn down.

I can post pics later tonight.

I didn't put her on the scale, by the time I got her home I was tired. But she was substantially larger than the other does she was with. She almost looked like an older buck in the face, really deep triangle head.

I'll be grabbing an SD card on Tuesday that should have her on it if you want a better look.

Yea, do that please. You would expect her body condition to go doe because she wouldn’t be able to digest the food properly.

I have seen bucks get their teeth knocked out and the opposite side always showed more wearing

I'll be in the stand I shot her out of tomorrow evening. I'll try to get pics of her sometime after I get home.

The 14.5 year old deer I killed was a doe. She was average weight but was boney to the point of having no fat. One symptom of CWD is teeth grinding so I was low key worried about that. Talked to the area biologist and he said don’t be worried about that if the tooth comes back over 7 years old.
