If you don’t fly under the power lines you suck.

I thought about getting into ag flying for a while. Those guys make a lot more money than you would think. Decided I didn't want to move that far away from civilization.

It doesn’t take long watching them to figure how big their balls are.

The old school guys and the ones that learned how to fly in the military will lay it down, but a lot of guys these days are not big risk takers and I can’t really blame them.

I think in a lot of instances it's safer to fly under the power lines rather than try to climb over them.

I watched the video from Scott Palmer last night. FYI he used to hang out with Johnny Knoxville’s crazy crew. He jumped out of a plane once without a parachute. He flew to a guy that did and clipped into a belt clip. The vid is on his YouTube channel. He also is a member of the Flying Cowboys. They fly Bush planes into crazy locations.

An uncle of mine used to fly and the first yr of boll weevil eradication I loaded for him. Flying unfamiliar fields due to BWE he came back with pieces of power line twice: once around the prop and another on the wing. Flying an AT 301. We worked on that old bitch more than he flew it. Good times though.

Friend of my was a pilot and bought a crop dusting business back in the late 70s. Having never done that type of flying he went to a old timer to learn how. When he climbed into the front cockpit of the plane they were gong to train in he saw that the few instruments that were in the panel had been covered with masking tape. He asked his instructor pilot how he was going to fly without knowing the airspeed, altitude, etc. The old timer replied, " you wont have time to look at the instrument panel, and if you actually saw what the instruments indicated you would never do this. I would think it would be safer to fly parallel to the power lines and lay you off some end rows then you would not have to fly right up to the lines before you start your climb.

Easier said than done. The fields we used to farm are all odd shaped surrounded by trees with some times two-three lines crossing or along the edge. You’d think we were farming near NYC with all that infrastructure but was in butthole, La. instead.

Thinking about it, the same transmission line crossed 4 of the 6 places dad farmed, those farms were 5 miles apart. Plus single phase lines, too.

awesome !! I am a private pilot with aspirations of commercial of some sort after I retire. Every year I get to do a little low level flying with crews for training. love to fly anywhere any time. Some simulated fire drops in a bell 412 riding 3rd seat.

Go find and old ag pilot if you can find one and talk to him, you will change your find in a hurry.

Their cancer rate is off the charts and most look like they have had multiple strokes from flying back through the pesticide mist for decades.

There’s a good article on page 68 in this magazine about the famous MS Delta pilot Booga Bottom who once flew under a bridge.

There used to be a video online that showed him flying under the Hushpuckena bridge, but all the links I found were broken. This article shows a pic.
