Advice on buying a self propelled push lawn mower

New home owner (woo!) and the weed eater I have is not going to cut it for my whole yard (pun intended). I have a large yard but not large enough to justify a riding mower, so I’m in the market for a good push mower preferably self propelled.
Keeping in mind I’m a new home owner with a family, I don’t want to drop a ton of cash on this thing (I’d like to be < $300 if that is possible for one that isn’t going to be a piece of crap).
Anybody have advice on a good one to look at (or somewhere reputable I could buy a used mower that isn’t a POS). I’ve got all the usual big box stores around me (Lowe’s, Home Depot, Ace, Walmart, etc...), and a few small local shops
I’m in Dallas by the way.

A Honda self propelled. Will cost more but last forever.

I despise self propelled mowers. They're not as loose as a typical mower making them harder to maneuver and many of them won't roll backwards. Seems like a good concept, but many times you end up working harder with the self propelled

I had a non self propelled Honda at my old house that was incredible. I think it was about $300 brand new. Started first pull every time and had lots I'd power. Was also very light. Don't get a shitty self propelled. It'll work you harder

So you suggest a non self propelled push mower?

Yea. Get a regular one. You can get a better mower for cheaper and cheap self propelled mowers suck arse. I always felt like they worked me harder. They are slow, have no power, they're heavy, and they dont last.

Cool guys thanks for the advice
Any idea about a reputable website or place that sells used mowers? Or is that going to be more hassle than it’s worth?

Probably worth looking into. I know in NOLA there's a shop that sells used mowers. That's where one of mine ended up. Doesn't look like an online kinda place though, you'll have to ride around locally for that. I wouldn't be scared of a used Honda or something.

$300 Toro from Home Depot. You can’t kill those machines. I’ve had one for 10 years plus it flooded. Had to take it in once to get the self propelled hooked back up. Still going strong.

I could not disagree more. Maybe with a big heavy craftsman it’s a pain but with something light like a Honda it’s not bad. And if he’s cutting an entire yard and not just edging, self propelled is a game changer.

quote:that's what I prefer to work with, but others will have their own opinions. I find the self propelled mowers too bulky and difficult to maneuver. I push my grandfather's yard every 2 weeks. He has alot of obstacles to cut around and I find the non self propelled mower easier to work with. If you don't have alot of shite to cut around, the self-propelled may be ok for you.

What make and model self propelled do you use? (Approximate)

It's a 10 year old Toro. Not sure what model

OP, used or not I'd go with self propelled no questions asked. I've never had the issues some have stated. In fact I just purchased a Toro personal pace from HD. When I stop walking, it stops. Very easy to manover and turn. I've had non propelled in the past and yes they are lighter, but I don't see where they are any advantage by the end of the mow.
As for the weed eater goes. I'd spend more money here and get one that's good. Pay now or pay later. My echo is 4 years old and I've never done anything to it besides string and gas. Cranks on 3rd pull. Echo and Sthil are both very reputable and will last.

Husqvarna with a Honda Motor. Can’t beat them, I think I paid right under $300 for it.
For the guy saying don’t buy a self propelled version, don’t listen to him. He is dumb if he believes they don’t go backwards. You just have to lift the front wheels off the ground.

8 year old Ariens self propel with front swivel wheels and Kawasaki engine. Great for getting around a yard with lots of flower beds and trees. But current prices are way up there...
