For the one or two who may not know, the 7mm-08 is an offshoot of the .308 WIN. Others from that line are:

.243
.260
.358

All are excellent deer rounds.

I'd almost forgotten about it, but the 308 also serves as the parent brass for the little known 25 Souper, AKA 25-08.

Federal premium 140 nosler partition are great out of my tikka. I’ve heard really good thing about the Barnes but no personal experience. I really like the partitions

IMO it's the best bullet design out there for under 3000 fps

I've got an a-bolt that's prolly 25 years old and a newer xbolt. Both are flawless and shoots lights out. Prolly end up picking one up.

I purchased a 7-08 A bolt with a BOSS in the mid 1980's. It has been flawless in all these years.

I've tried most of the premium ammo with Winchester ballistic tip being the best until 4 years ago. At the recommendation of a friend I bought some Double Tap ammo made with Barnes 140g. bullets.

Lets just say my gun really likes this ammo. Most of the time three shot groups are touching each other.

In all seriousness, it’s a great round. I bought the gun I was shot with from the guy and it’s what my kids use. They have killed 12 deer with it and I use it on occasion and have killed a few with it. It’s in my top 3, 1. 280 Remington 2. .308 Win. 3. 7mm-08

I was having the same problem with 130 gr .270 core locts. The bullet was breaking apart too fast and not passing through or only leaving a small exit wound. Since most of my shots were 100-200 yards I stepped up to 150 grain federal fusion bullets to slow the bullet down and carry through without breaking apart as fast and they’ve produced much better results.

Just curious, what puts the 308 ahead of the 7mm-08 for you? Other than the availability of ammo and ability to get a little heavier bullet, the 7mm has superior ballistics if you want to reach out to further distance.
