I'm sure the people in this thread that can't understand how this could happen, probably have never captained a boat near a rig or while fighting a large tuna. Not making excuses for a the capt, as a professional making a mistake this big certainly shouldn't happen and he will likely lose his job over this. But high currents, strong winds/waves, a large boat acting like a sail, spinning the boat, and the commotion of fighting a big tuna. It would only take a momentary lapse of judgement for it to be too late, especially since generally you are on the up current side of the rig when fishing for tuna.
Part of being a captain is being aware of your surroundings. Sorry about your buddy's boat and losing your job over being a shitty captain.

I could understand getting 'tunnel vision' with a huge billfish, but big tuna are being caught every day right now. Wonder how long he'd been a captain?
Posted on 10/29/13 at 9:40 am to Capt ST
Yep, that is the worst case of tunnel vision I have ever heard of, from EVERYONE on the boat!

You'd think the other guys on the boat would yell, "hey! We're about to hit this platform"

Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) rescued five anglers after their boat struck an offshore oil rig and sank.
So the joke is LDWF rescued them from the rescue boat? Sorry I'm slow this morning.

That's what gets me, there's always somebody walking around the cockpit looking at other shite. There's not a whole lot to see other than the tuna doing the death circle.

Exactly. There's obviously a lot of buffoonery that went on.

Yeah, I'm usually wondering around looking for my next beer. I imagine even I would have seen the platform from behind the lid of the ice chest.

Have we found out which rig they hit?

I am willing to bet that the insurance company is going to perform a pretty thorough investigation into this matter. Seems too convenient.

Yeah, seems fishy.

Yeah, let's all risk our lives to try to catch an insurance check so we can upgrade to something nicer than a 65 viking.

The owner decided he'd rather a hatteras

Upgrade is doubtful, but if the guy was up to his ears, you never know.
That said, I doubt a professional captain would go along with that plan.

do captains generally have insurance?

This, guy may never captain again. Plus I'm sure even with some really nice insurance the owner would still take a pretty big loss. Could have just sold the thing for a similar markdown.

Right now, you're getting your arse handed to you selling a boat like that. Definitely a buyer's market.

Right, but if the guy needs cash bad enough to consider intentionally crashing his 65' Viking into a platform then I think he would be ok with getting his arse handed to him on the sale.

Depending on interest rate and his ability to make payments, it may be more beneficial to sink it. You never know if he was under water on the boat.
