How did cicadas become locusts? My dad called them that as well.

If you need some rain hang those little dead demon bastards on the fence, then build you an Ark.

Is that a gross exaggeration?

Cicadas aren't locusts.

Locusts are basically grasshoppers.

When is a locust not a locust?

I would have backed up dropped the deck and did it again. I find Copperheads and Moccissins to be fearless and aggressive. I have terriers and they will not back down from snakes and welcome the dance. Had a moc strike my dog on the boney part of the of his jaw. No harm no foul...But he circled wanting that snake and the snake was striking until he met the shovel....Had to put dog inside though to do this.

Have to partially disagree there - that’s very often not the case. Of the 8 cottonmouths I found a couple days ago, every one fled once it knew I was there. Only one put up a very brief defensive display - first one I saw was a baby on a branch. When I got real close for pics, it perked up. I waved my hand in front of it to try to get it to act up for some better photos, but it gave a quick rattle of the tail, one strike, then got the hell out of there. I find that around 1/3 of them will make a stand. I was only able to catch 1 out of 8, and I barely got him - had to tail him as he almost hit the water and fling him back on land.

I don’t see many copperheads, but the ones I’ve caught have been docile. They basically just sit there. Not much defense at all and very easy to catch.

This was the baby - smallest I’ve seen on my creek…

The only one I caught that day…

Two that were around 4 feet away from each other on/under the same log…

Chonky boy…

Lots of juveniles/yellow tails out that day and more easily spooked than usual.

Another note on cottons - that big boy musked when he took off and you could smell it 10 feet away.. People always talk about “smelling” cottonmouths. In the last year and a half, I’ve encountered 130 cottonmouths and caught 41, and that is maybe the second time I’ve smelled a cottonmouth that wasn’t in my hands. Even the ones I’ve caught, only a couple times have I been musked - the rest don’t give off any discernible smell in my opinion. Whereas I think every single ribbon snake I’ve caught in that time has musked me.
