Low oil pressure warning came on this morning. It jumped back up to 40#, but fluctuated between 20 and 40. Oil is a few miles overdue to be changed. Should I change oil and see if that's the culprit? Or just bring it in and see if sending unit is bad? Just changed the pressure switch a couple months ago.

Why did you change it? Were you having the same or similar issue with pressure?

Oil pressure gauge wasn't working. Check engine light came on IIRC.

Changing the oil probably won't fix the issue since you're only a few miles over.

Is the replacement gauge OEM or after market?

Does the fluctuation occur while you're at a constant speed, when accelerating or other?

seems to fluctuate when I slow. Didn't drive it very long. I've been reading the likely culprit is o-ring on pick up tube, or bad pressure release valve. To the shop I guess

it was the oil pressure sensor that went out. I assume he used OEM

It should fluctuate downward when you slow; does it fluctuate UP when you slow?

It’s likely your sending unit. Bring it somewhere and let them put a mechanical gauge on it.

The 5.3’s are notorious for very low oil pressure, mine stays low since it was new

I have the same issue and mine is at cold start/run when in gear but stopped. It doesn’t do it in park because the computer is compensating for cold start by increasing the RPM but a red light, it’s idled down in gear and will drop to 0 oil pressure.

I’ve changed the oil pressure sensor and it didn’t do it. There’s a chance my oil pump isn’t what it once was and struggles to pull oil as fast but With 286k miles and paint nearly gone off the truck, I just don’t care about that anymore and drive it until it will fall apart. I take good care of the engine and change oil regularly with Mobil and Lucas so I know it’s still getting good fluids and lubrication to the motor.

Does this happen with a cold and warmed up engine?

This is normal.....but having it checked wouldn't be a terrible idea

I don't think I would drive it, until I got it checked out.

Mine always has, i thought something was wrong at first, but talked with some guys that bought theirs new and it’s the same thing. Hot/Cold makes no difference. I’m guessing it was designed that way, I’m religious about oil changes so hopefully it doesn’t cause a problem when i start to get some mileage on it

This happened to a friend of mine his oil filter collapsed on the inside with no visible signs from the outside. once that was changed he never had the problem again. Hope this helps or is the culprit because that's a cheap fix, good luck.

Keep in mind that when warmed up, engines don't need a lot of oil pressure, especially at idle. I put in an aftermarket mechanical oil pressure gauge in my work truck and cold start oil pressure is around 60 - 80psi on 5W-20 and when fully warmed will be around 12psi at idle and about 35psi at interstate cruising speeds. I might go to 5W-30 on the next oil change just to see if a difference is made but I don't expect much. OEM gauges are notoriously inaccurate too, I'd hook up a known good pressure gauge before doing much else.

This. Happened to mine. It's a $50 part but a bitch to get to unless you have the right tool. I have a friend that is a mechanic come change it and it took all of 5 minutes. Make sure you change the filter inside the block before the sending unit too.

Oil sending unit and clean pickup screen. See it all the time. Check oil level obviously first but if level is fine and it’s the sending unit. Put a code reader on it and it will pop up if CE light is on.

Yep, definitely replace the screen if you change the unit...i changed my sending unit myself, and while it wasn't hard changing it, i had a hell of a time unclipping the sensor. Once I figured out an easy way to do it on my 5.3L, it might've taken me 5 minutes total to unclip the sensor, replace the sending unit and screen.

You need to have someone put a legit gauge on it to see exactly what the true oil pressure is...then you can see if the sending unit is bad.

Have you pulled the dipstick to be sure it is not very low on oil?
