You can discuss calibers but this is spot on.

I'd have my 12 gauge pump for turkeys and ducks, my 20 gauge O/U for smaller birds like dove, a .22, a deer rifle, and a pistol I felt comfortable with

A bazooka is better than either of the three. But you can't shoot squirrels with that either. So I'll take the .22.

Ok, I'll ask...why?

.22mag,will do anything a .22LR will do,and more

The only advantage that I see for a .22LR,is that it's a bit more quiet, and ammo is more available.
but I have several thousand rounds for either 1 already.

Because I have a .22 mag, have shot squirrels with it and don't particularly like the results. Same with a .17. In the event you don't hit them in the head you can pretty much chunk the squirrel. It's a great caliber but if I had to pick only 5 guns to own I would choose the 4 I use the most for hunting and my truck gat.

I have found, that if you use the slower, heavier rounds in the .22 mag,it doesn't mess them up bad. It's worked OK for me. .22LR is better for squirrel though,no doubt about it,but a .22 mag is also good for hogs, and maybe a deer,if you really need it,and can get a good shot.

Of course,we're better of when we have lots of choices, but If I have to pick between the .22 mag,and .22 LR, I would just have to go with the mag.
Really, I would hate to ever have to make choices like that, because no matter what, I would have to give up some guns that I really love.
