How the hell do you know she not ready for it? Have you met her? Spent any time with her?

She’s five years old.

Yes she is five. Let's remember my original post. I asked the range for a .410 slug. I said I had plans to let her use the gun I bought her for her birthday. I never said that I was gonna take her on the youth hunt next weekend. She shows a lot of interest and loves going hunting with me so if she wants to try it and can safely and humanely do it, she can. I'll be damned to tell her she can't because she's "too young".

What’s your point?

I’d guarantee you that there are several posters that took a deer at that age or younger.

Again, kids age differently. Some will be more mature to handle it than others.

It’s the parents decision not someone on a mag board that’s never met the kid (and sounds like doesn’t baby kids).

OP can do whatever he wants, I’m just expressing my opinion on the internet, so calm down.

I don’t doubt that many have shot deer at younger than five and many more parents just stick a rifle in the hands their child for a picture they can brag about at work.

My original post was a reply about sitting in a shooting house and holding the gun for them, aiming for them, and then pulling the trigger for them. What is the point of that? Why rush to have your child kill a deer when they can’t even aim the firearm properly? Why not just wait a few more years? It seems like it is mostly a dick measuring contest among parents, not unlike travel ball.

I guess we just have different viewpoints, but discussing the maturity of a particular five year old versus another five year old when it comes to handling firearms and hunting is absurd to me. Why rush your child through the process of growing up as fast as possible? Why not give them something to look forward to when they’re old enough to remember it better?

I don’t know anything about a .410 slug but I know there’s multiple states in the Midwest that are shotgun only and they hammer deer with 20 gauge slugs out to 120-150 yards. I know it’s considerably bigger but for a kid that young 30-40 yard shot should be perfectly deadly.

Killed my first deer at 5 with a .410 slug. 25 yds. Was the only thing pop had that fit me.

My daughter killed a deer at 5 with a 270. Not all 5 yr olds are equal

. I’m with you baw. I make mine show me they can do it all independently.

None of my kids were able to do it at five. But you have a lot of kids sitting in laps with Dad doing everything out there “killing” deer.
