What is the realistic range for a slug? 30 yards?
I bought my daughter a Stevens 301 Turkey gun for her 5th birthday and plan on putting a burris ff3 on it. Thought I would try and let her shoot it for a year or two for deer/hogs with slugs.

Better off with a 357 or 44 mag carbine than a 410 slug.

Yea I agree. She shows a lot of interest, but if she's not accurate no way I'm letting her get behind the trigger.

It’s not like you want a 5-7 year old or even 8 or 9 year old shooting very far anyway. 100 yards is way too far for someone that young, you want little pot shots. They probably won’t be very accurate with a .410 slug beyond 40-50 yards anyway.

I hunted with a 410 when I was 6 or 7. Never shot a deer with it but i could hit a pie plate at 30 yards so dad said i could hunt.. we hunted national forest so shots were close anyway.

I've never shot anything with a .410 slug, but years ago I did see what one will do to a safe cracker. The guy had a clean hole right in the center of his sternum that looked like it was made with a hole punch. No exit wound. I didn't watch the autopsy but judging by the fine spray of blood that was all over his face and chest, I would feel confident saying that his heart had a nice size hole in it also. He was shot indoors at close range. Within 5 to 10 yards. As squarely as he was hit, I would guess his spine stopped the slug.

My brother killed his first deer with a .410 slug. Did the job.

He already bought the damn gun guys. Just help him out good knows we need the youth hunters.

It’s 100-150 feet. 30-50 yards

Take her to small field that has max shot of 100 yards and in a shooting house only. You prop gun on window seal. Help her hold it and put her finger on trigger, your finger on top and help her pull trigger. It’s an assisted shot but good enough.

Can someone explain this to me? What’s the point of rushing a child to do something that they clearly aren’t ready for? Why not just wait until they are older?

How the hell do you know she not ready for it? Have you met her? Spent any time with her?

Its her parents decision when she’s ready. If she can shoot the gun good enough and she wants to go, why would you say she isn't ready?

Appreciate the input from everyone. Looks like 30 yards it is. Haha.

A.410 is a very poor deer gun. We want to set our kids up for success, not failure.

If you'll be using slug, I see no reason that the opinions given wouldn't be heeded. Either way, it's a single piece of lead going down range. I'd much rather she have a small caliber rifle with scope than a shotgun.
