I have the 300 ultra in long action. I also reload. I can get anywhere from 308 to wthby 30-378 performance.

looking to get a big-bore rifle in the next year and have it narrowed down to 300 win mag vs 300 wby mag. Is there a significant enough difference in ballistics, power, etc to justify the more expensive weatherby and not-so-readily available ammo? Im looking for synthetic stock anyway, dont need a "pretty gun", would rather spend the extra on best glass I can afford.
No brainer Imo. I don't remember the ballistics being profoundly in favor of the Weatherby and the ammo availability is a HUGE drawback. People are talking about "long range" and 300-400 yards in the same post. Those ranges are easily obtainable in standard cartridges. Am I missing something?
Someone give me some ballistic numbers that justify the 300wby.

Ha I agree. For 400 yard and under shots, maybe even up to 500 IMO there's no reason to go outside of something that you can buy in a big box store. Standard store ammo and a $1500 gun/ scope and you can easily shoot 400 yards.
Given that, if you are truly talking "long range" 600-800+ yards IMO its laughable to worry about ammo supplies and cost. You really shouldn't be using store bought ammo for that kind of thing, so its a moot point.I mean if you run out of ammo in Wyoming on an elk hunt you plan on shooting 800 yards you aren't going to the local Walmart and buying winchester ammo off the shelf to shoot 800 yards.

That and calling anything launching a .308 bullet "big-bore". .375 Ruger, .375 H&H, .416 Rigby, 45-70 Gov't, .450 Marlin, .458 Win Mag, etc. when I think of "big-bore" rifles. Love to find a Ruger #1 chambered in .458

That's correct. And whether you're talking 300 yards with over the counter ammo or 800 with hand loads, the 300 winny will do EVERYTHING the 300wby will do, so why even bother with it? I mean, unless you just want to say you have a 300wby, but then if that was the case why make a thread about it? Just go get the wby.

FTR, this is coming from a guy that bought a 7mm STW to say he had a 7mm STW.
On a completely unrelated note, I just found a Rem 700 BDL in 8mm rem on Gunbroker. I would love to build an STW on that. SS fluted barrel and Jewel trigger on that blued action and wood furniture.

Already have one in 257. Want something bigger that can take large north american game out to 500-600 yds

You can kill elk at 600 with a .300 win mag that shoots well. You can kill them a bit deader with a .338 win mag. No need to mess with boutique calibers for that unless you just want one.
300 and under I would use a .375 h&h and past that a .338 win mag, but I’m a pretty firm believer in big bullets.

Personally I would go with the 300 Win Mag.
To me the slight upgrade in performance doesn’t offset the cost of their rifle and ammo. Also, the consideration of ammo availability and the cost/avalibility of gun parts should you need them.

I can more understand the quarter bore then the 300. Not really a comparable quarter bore mag out there that I can think off the top of my head. But hell, if you want it, go for it.

I bought a used Weatherby MarkV in 300wby with a swarovski scope from a pawn shop in houma for 900 bucks. Used Ammoseek.com and bought 2 boxes of ammo for 70 bucks. Like the rifle a lot, mine has a muzzle break on it. I find it kicks less than my 7 mag. Find the best deal for the gun and go from there.

The UPS truck delivers ammo to your door. Get the WBY. Can’t tell you the last time I bought rifle ammo at Walmarks.
I have the 257 WBY and the 300 WBY.

Take a look at the 6.5x300 WBY ballistics before you buy. It’s plenty enough to kill elk, ultra flat, and reasonable recoil. I’m a big fan of fast 300s, but the fast 6.5 is impressive. Would also make a nice whitetail round that you can develop confidence in before you go.

.300 Wtby with 180 gr Nosler partitions is a death ray for any North American animal and the vast majority of those on planet earth, I love mine.
Ammo is a bit more expensive than .300 Win but is way hotter off the shelf, a .300 Win will have to be reloaded to even approach Wthby ballistics, this is not even debatable
That being said I would buy neither for hunting white tail deer in the south, just is not needed or cost effective, requires a longer action and a heavier gun as well.
IMHO if you feel you must have a magnum the WSM's are the way to go for white tail.

I also have a 7 in 300saum, and the recoil isn't bad with 168gr or lighter bullets.
I don't believe Remington makes ammo for it any more, and can't remember seeing ammo in stores but only a few times and it was pricey.
I'm fortunate to reload and bought a bag of factory hulls on line 10 years ago when I got the gun. The other components are standard that can be used in any 30cal cartridge.

The new nosler rounds also have some damn good ballistics.
I am still thinking just going with a 300 win for my new rifle for hunting out west but would love one of the larger magnums.

I really appreciate the discussion here, thank you for all the good info. Some background info about the original post: my dad has a freakin arsenal of high caliber magnums and he reloads, and he's 70. So I can't justify the cost of an Uberti sharps 45-70 when I'm gonna inherit all of it in the next 20yrs (or 30 Lord willin). And I can borrow any of it anytime I want. He has everything mentioned here in the thread EXCEPT a 300, be it win, wby, or RUM. It's his idea I do this, and now the bug is in my head :)

If you really want a .300 and are planning on reloading I would go with the Weatherby, it is actually a bit easier to load accuratly for due to the freebore IMHO.

If dad will reload, the WBY.
