300 vs 300

looking to get a big-bore rifle in the next year and have it narrowed down to 300 win mag vs 300 wby mag. Is there a significant enough difference in ballistics, power, etc to justify the more expensive weatherby and not-so-readily available ammo? Im looking for synthetic stock anyway, dont need a "pretty gun", would rather spend the extra on best glass I can afford.

What is the purpose of the gun?

I own a 300 Weatherby (gift from my dad). If I were to purchase a new 300 it would be Win Mag.
Simple based off price and availability of ammo. Neither ammo is cheap, but Weatherby ammo is high as giraffe pussy.
If you reload, this can be offset somewhat and I might be inclined to purchase the wby.

I've never found charm in the weatherby magnums. Give me something that I can find readily available in any Walmart or Academy in the country.
That said, there is a fairly significant ballistic difference in the 2 300's you mentioned.

my dad does big time, but he has neither caliber himself. I would buy him a set of dies and let him play with it between seasons. However, I could get a 7mm RUM or a 338 win mag...he already has those guns/dies...

i've hunted with the 300 wby mag. relative of mine has one. i was REALLY impressed with it. where we hunt most shots are 150-300 yds with opportunity for up to 400 yds. i don't trust myself with my .30-'06 out that far. but, with the 300 wby mag i've had no problems beyond 250 yds.
i would suggest a good recoil pad as the kick is "sporty".

fair enough. but I take does at 400 yds with my .308
300WM is more than capable at those distances.

Why not the 300 ultra?

Good luck finding 300 wby ammo locally.
300 win mag will do anything you need it to. Stick with what's available.
I bought a 270wsm a few years back...and get pissed off still when I go to academy and they have one box on the shelf. And that's more available than 300wby

i agree that it can, but not with me behind the trigger. i don't have the chance to practice those yardage shots enough - too much drop

Go get Mr randy at R&P to order you some.

Will you be shooting this gun a lot or will it mainly be a hunting gun, meaning check zero and 2-3 shots a year?
Barrel life on Weatherby's is notoriously short. It's a extremely high pressure, fast round that burns barrels up quickly. But, it you have someone to reload you don't have to use super hot rounds like Weatherby loads and the barrel will last much longer.
Also, ammo is pretty crazy if buying factory ammo. Like 80-120 for $20.
I have a .257 Wby Mag. It is an awesome rifle but I don't reload .257 (yet) and ammo is hard to find and like I said, crazy expensive.

I acquired a Remington Model 7 SAUM 300 this year.
Friend bought it for his son who's scared of it
Finding ammo was a bitch, I heard they discontinued the caliber (?) who knows

I'll be honest, I wouldn't want to shoot a tiny model 700 in 300SAUM either.

If your western hunt includes elk, I'd get the 338 WM instead of either 300's. If you go the route of the 300's, I'd go w/ the Weatherby. Why let the fact that ammo is twice as expensive and poorly available locally interfere if it has better ballistics? If buying a 300 magnum, go w/ the best ballistics. As far as ammo, order it yourself (a bunch of boxes) online and save some money.

Love my weatherby. Ammo is expensive but I reload. I'd say get a 7mm Mag. I have one also and use it more than my 300. I just have a lot of confidence in a 7 mag

It's not that bad, pushes more than it kicks but I have a fluted barrel which may help

I have a model seven 300 Rem. SAUM and I don’t find it kicks bad at all. My 45-70 HR kicks more.

If I were set on a weatherby I’d go full retard and get a .30-378 weatherby. It’s about as good as you can do for an ultra long range hunting caliber when price and recoil tolerance don’t matter.
That said, for a long range hunting caliber I would get either .300 or .338 win mag. They’re a lot more reasonable, available in a wider variety of rifles, and ammo is readily available for both.
