If you want to use bird shot, then more power to you.

Not gonna say it’s a terrible home defense load but there is definitely better and wiser

There is no right or wrong answer, and sure there are choices that are better than others but it's really "person" and "home" specific. Its certainly no attack on AR's or anything, I've owned them for years and love them. But regardless of the gun, training and comfortability with the weapon is going to provide the greatest chance of adequate self-defense in any situation. But when talking home defense, does anyone, especially gun enthusiasts such as most of the people on this board, really keep just one specific gun around for that (i.e., backups in other rooms or in a spot that is more accessible for night, day, while in bed, etc.).

Of course not.

I keep several ARs placed in specific locations around the house.

Well 556 is 333 more than 223

Negative. 5.56mm X .0396" = .220

What do navy seals use? That’s what I would use. They seem to do very well in CQ situations.

For years they used 9mm NATO carbines (HK-MP5) but now use 5.56 variants. However, this wasn't because of deficiencies of the 9mm NATO in CQB situations, but rather their deficiencies in longer range engagements. They made the switch because they wanted more of a one size fit all rifle.

FWIW.

This. Indoors, I'd much rather shoot a 9mm without ear protection than a shotgun or an AR.

I run my AR with 5.56 Federal green tips for home defense. To me its a great gun, but it's too heavy for me wife. She prefers her MP 15-22 for her go to gun for the house.

How often do you "run" this?

Dumbest fricking word used in hunting/shooting discussions.

"I was running a PSE Masterblaster 4,000 with some 632.88 gr Superspine arrows and a 3 blade exact-superpunchers pushing 390 fps while hanging from my sitlongbuddy400 tree swing when a TOAD came to my pile of Mike's Buck Munch and I punched him through the 10 ring." That's the guy I think of every time I hear what someone is "running."

They’re the exact same size? The AR will be a little heavier but recoil is nonexistent in a 5.56

I corrected it but I meant to say heavy. The MP 15-22 is super lightweight compared to my XM15 Bushmaster.

How accessorized is your Bushy, baw?

Q: How do you AR baws get by with a red dot that will fog in the instance you have to go outside to throw some lead during a hot July night?

If you mean go to as in self defense for the house you should really convince her to change her go to gun.

The M&P only weighs like 4 pounds.

I don't think mine have ever done that.
