Congrats on the new gun for your son. I'm sure he'll enjoy it ALMOST as much as you'll enjoy the time w/ him. It's hard to go wrong w/ scopes for rimfires, although I'd stay away from non-rimfire scope that are set up w/ 100 yds instead of rimfire scope set up for 50 yards. My last 2 rimfire scopes were kinda "off brand" for me, Hawke 4-12X and Athlon 6-18X. Both will fit inside your budget. I like both of them. They both have illuminated reticles, but they were bought to include night hunting. I like Vortex as well. They seem to have a nice mix of features and cost. As far as magnification, when I bought my son a 10/22, i put a 2-7X Nikon on it. Good luck and keep us updated. Enjoy shooting/hunting w/ your son.

I'd love to find a good CZ or a Bergera.
I'm bumping an old thread as to not start a new one.

I'm looking into tinkering with precision shooting for a bolt rifle from 50-100 yards

I'm eyeing the 457 CZs as well. The MRT says it has tighter tolerances tailored for precision 22lr ammo, but holy shite, that stuff is like $0.55 a round and I simply won't pay that for 22 ammo

What are your thoughts?

I can get the 457 Varmint for ~$600

I have a 457 that I shoot in rimfire PRS matches. A 457 is a great start into the precision rimfire world because of how easy it is to upgrade at later dates. I started out with a stock 457 chassis model, and now the only thing that is stock on the rifle any longer is the action body and bolt.

Which ammo are you seeing for 0.55 a round? That would have to be the absolute top of the market.

You can great results with SK Standard+ (>$10/50 rounds). Then you have SK Rifle Match and SK Long Range Match (about $15/50 rounds). Then above that would be Lapua Center-X, Midas+, X-ACT, as well as others. The Lapua ammo starts around $18/50 rounds.

Lapua and SK are the same ammo but the rounds that get labeled Lapua grade out better after manufacturing.

With all that said SK and Lapua are on the hard to find side right now.

There is also ELEY (which is what I shoot). Eley Team, Eley Match, Eley Tenex are the 3 main offerings from Eley. Team is around $14/50 rounds, Match is $17/50 rounds, and Tenex is $22/50 rounds.

RWS is another brand that many competition shooters use. I'm not as familiar with the RWS brand as the other 2.

The 457 MTR barrels have a match chamber. Which means the chamber is cut tighter and the bullet engages the rifling when it is chambered. This has been shown to produce better precision, however is does potentially lead to issues with extraction of live rounds.

If you think you will just plink with the rifle out to 100 yards and that is the extent the MTR is probably you best option. However is you think you might want to go further down the rabbit hole the Varmint may be the better option because you won't be starting out buying a more expensive setup that you will eventually replace parts on in the future.

It was indeed the ELEY that I did a quick search on and found them in the Tenex price per round shocker.

This is something I can stomach

Thank you for the information. Right now I'm probably going with the Varmint and shooting some middle of the line 22 ammo. But, my mind changes with guns in a day or within the hour after more research and reading I do

Dare I ask how much your competition rig is?

I recently inhered a lever-action Marlin 22. It's got some superficial rust marks and the stock was looking rough. Sanded the stock and rubbed it down with tung oil.

I have a Marlin 60, as well, so I can do some plinking now.

My grandfather gave me his Browning 22LR Lever Action many years ago. That rifle is very accurate and looks great. My uncle, who was his only son ,was going to buy me any rifle I wanted if I gave him that 22 after my grandfather passed but he ended up dying before we ever made a deal.
