Othello WA - cool trip. I hunted Moses Lake a few years ago. The stay in the duck blind all day there if needed. Beautiful area. Pheasant opportunities too. Look up Paul’s Pond for duck hunting. It is in the area. That is worth the experience if you have an extra day and can get in.

Fact. Paul's Pond is supposed to be epic...locals without access cuss them on the regular LOL,

They do stay in the blind from shooting time to shooting time if needed....cooking a blind breakfast/brunch is a big thing up here. I don't usually do it because I am pretty happy with 3-4 ducks or geese a day but the heavy bag limit up here is great if you are into that sort of thing and paying an outfitter is different than hunting on your own 3-4 days a week during the season.

Last year I hunted 6 states and drove over 10k miles. A new business this year will trim that down, home much I don't know.

I’m interested in hearing more about this, I have to travel to Calgary and Edmonton for work at some point, if you don’t mind pointing me in a good direction to research.

Massigs Migrators....specialize in goose hunting on business trips to Calgary and they stack 'em. Also very affordable for the area. Great trip....

Geese are a different story. You need a lot of gear and a lot of scouting.

I have a pretty decent goose field spread and its only a 13 hour drive for me....if you are interested and think you may have the hook up I'm just saying....

There is also some good waterfowling about 5 hours south of Edmonton and 2 hours south of Calgary. There are way less people hunting that area and the Farmers are mostly immigrants and very open to the idea of your hunting on their place in exchange for a share in the harvest. Communication can be tricky but the point usually is pretty evident....

That's awesome. I've hunted Oklahoma twice for whitetail. It's a great state.

Has anyone ever tried to hunt Osceolas on Florida WMAs? It sounds like they’re incredibly crowded but I can’t really see paying that much for an outfitter when I want to do it myself anyway.

I’m considering an attempt at a slam next year and think I may be able to swing the Merriam and Rio combo in my regular two week late April trip. It won’t be easy but it seems like Florida is the bigger challenge.

Sure I'm interested. The place I hunt is a little further north than I would prefer. Mostly because it freezes out earlier than I'd like. I value the relationships that I've built. But I would like to find a place I could hunt later in Oct and even up to the first week of Nov.

Maybe we could hit them both?

Yes, it actually is with eagle lakes. We are not staying in their cabin but will be doing 3 days of goose/duck hunting with them. Really excited to try out the pacific flyway.

Buy your plane flights now for your trips. Dirt cheap

Got a flight to Colorado non stop round trip for 250

Flight to Bozeman 1Stop round trip for 400

You can stuff meat in a styrofoam ice chest as and pay for it is as checked luggage way cheaper than drivinf

Father and son Fly in only bear hunt and fishing trip in Saskatchewan in 3 weeks. Should be a trip of a lifetime.

Will still hunt whitetail in Texas and La.

In the draw for bighorn sheep in 2 states still. Didn’t draw mountain goat for the 10th year in a row.

Killed a few on public land including one this Spring.

Pros - Several of the WMA’s have really good turkey populations and relatively high success rates. Some as high as 30-40%.

Cons - Everybody feels the same way you do. A few WMA’s have General Seasons where you just can just show up. Same with some of the National Forests. The vast majority are by quota hunt permits only.

The most desirable WMA’s typically need one or two preference points. This year I needed two to draw a permit for Caravelle Ranch which is not the most coveted tag by any means. So even if you started drawing permits this Fall you’d been looking at a hunt in 2022 or 2023.

As a Florida resident who’s harvested a few dozen Osceolas I tell people this. Even the best WMA’s have a 30-40% success rate. And to draw a permit you’ll wait at least two years. The math says odds are you won’t be successful when you do draw a WMA quota tag. So then you’ll try again and come back in 2-3 years. The math only then says your odds are better than 50%. That’s 5 years of waiting and drawing to get a 50/50 chance of getting your bird.

My suggestion; just buy a hunt. Get a reputable outfitter and bag one the first time. Better yet, hire an Outfitter and do a DIY public land hunt the same week. You can take 2 per season here in FL. The quality of hunting is infinitely better on private land. If you want some leads for outfitters or where to apply for tags shoot an email to myusername^^^ @hotmail
