Paul Mueller, a B.A.S.S. Nation competitor from Connecticut, of all places, provided a stunning example of that today as he rocketed from 47th place to 5th with a 32-04 haul, the heaviest single-day Classic weight of the 5-fish limit era. The smallest specimen in his bag weighed 5 1/2 pounds.

Randy Howell brought in 29 pounds and won it today. Mueller had 24 pounds today and lost by a pound. If he could've weighed just one more fish the first day he would've won it all.

Seemed like a great guy. Said he had hundreds of people watching him from the bridge when he was catching them every cast.

There were some serious fish hauled out of there this weekend.

Have met him a few times, used to inspect his house when I worked for another company. He's pretty genuine. Glad to see him win it. One of the nicest guys you'd meet.

I saw a video of him catching bass after bass with the whole bridge of people cheering each fish. It was amazing he was getting 4 and 5 pounders cast after cast.

That bridge will never be the same. I bet as we speak there are 40 Bama fans cursing at each other to get out of the way this morning right there.
