2 stroke Mercury 60 problems

I have a 2003 Mercury 60. It will run fine out of the water with ear muffs on it. When I try to run it in the water though, it will bog down big time at full throttle. Can't get over 8 mph. Noticed today though that if I trim it all the way up so that it is barely in the water it will run like a top. As soon as it gets further down in water it will start surging and eventually bog down. Any idea what the problem could be? Drained all of the gas out and put fresh non-ethanol gas in it today, so I don't think that is the problem.

If it is a carb motor have them cleaned out/rebuilt. If efi take it to someone that knows them. What gas are you running? I only run premix non-ethanol. Don't trust any of the factory oil mix equiptment to work right. When they start acting up they either add too much or too little oil.

Is it hard to rebuild the carbs or would you recommend bringing it somewhere?

If you've never done it before I'd take it to someone else to do. It's pretty straight forward, but there are tricks of the trade so to speak.

i have a 2002 75 hp Merc. Mine was doing roughly the same thing. I brought it to Jerry Laloux's Outboard Shop in Gonzales. He will check compression before he does anything else. At that point he will go thru your motor and let you know what's needed to fix it.
It cost me right at $400 for a complete tune up. His shop number is 225-644-3797.
He is an expert in his craft and absolutely honest and straight forward. Hope this helps!!

I have never been on a boat with a Mercury outboard engine that did not give a problem. Never. At least 5 out of 5 problems.

Thanks for the recommendation. I've kind of been looking for a new mechanic. I used to use greenwell springs marine. Don't get me wrong, they did great work, just extremely pricey and the guy who runs it isn't very personable at all.

And I've been on two boats with yamahas that broke down offshore. So what? Maintenance is required on every outboard, especially one that is 14 years old.

Well, just heard back from the mechanic on what the problem is. Apparently the liner on the inside of the fuel hose came undone in little pieces and was scattered throughout the fuel system. After doing a little research, this looks to be a pretty common problem on Mercury motors.

That's from using ethanol gas I was told. Mine did the same thing. The replacement hoses are not supposed to do that. Mine is a 1997 and it had the same problem about 3 years ago. No problems since.

Yeah, that's what I heard too. So...what exactly is the benefit of this ethanol? Seems to cause problems in everything it is used in.

It doesnt do anything but harm to the things it goes in.

I'm still calling for a class action law suit. Outboard and small engine owners vs. The United States of America.
I'd settle for a 2017 motor of the same hp.

I have a 60 HP 4 stroke at the lake house that lost all fuel pressure and bogged down to about the same speed. Figured fuel line was bad because bulb wouldn't get hard. replaced the fuel line. Now it is trying to turn over but won't even fricking start. Pulled filter out yesterday and it has water in the gas. Going to try and flush it out today. I'm filling it with tannerite if it won't start

I was actually just thinking about that myself. Seems like there would be some type of precedent or something for a class action lawsuit. I mean if you can sue McDonald's because their coffee is too hot, seems like this would be a slam dunk.

Ethanol gas was forced on us, and as a direct result many people had problems with their small engines.

My engine is a 1990 2 stroke.
I go out out of the way and pay more for ethanol free gas.

wouldn't get hard

Anywho, don't know if you guys heard, but I read to be considered ethanol free, it only has to be 6% or less.
I still use it in my boats and lawn gear, but also use ring free and stabil marine.

I was on 3 Yamaha powered boats last week and they all have major engine problems. Triple F350s with power heads corroding internally and a blown lower unit, an F300 with a thrust bearing on its way out requiring power head replacement and an F150 whose owner neglected valve train service and will require power head replacement. What should that tell me about Yamaha?

Sounds like you got the issue resolved. Ethanol destroying the inner lining of fuel line if not a brand specific issue. Mercury is not the only brand who suffers from the devestating effects of ethanol. Just this year alone we have replaced fuel lines and cleaned fuel systems on Mercury, Suzuki, Yamaha, Tohatsu, Johnson/Evinrude, Honda, and even some sterndrives. Several had "ethanol resistant" fuel line, but still failed and required replacement.
