I bought into the flame king refillable cylinders years ago. They sold a refill kit with a cylinder, valve assembly, and a stand for the regular 20lb gas grill tanks. I just looked at Amazon and they are currently in stock. The price has gone up almost double from what I paid…but they have served me well. I have about 5 of the refillable 1lb tanks and the refill kit.

The disposable tanks are absolutely refillable, but the flame king tanks I have have a bleeder valve that prevents overfill. They are also legal for transporting (if that matters to you).

I bought the little brass refill fitting off Amazon for like 10 bucks. I don’t refill a lot as I have full-size bottles with heaters in my permanent stands. But I do it every so often for my wife to take heater buddy to soccer games.

Just looked, you can get this whole setup for $20

You can get the refill adapter at most any hardware store that sells burners/grill equipment. I found it easier to also use a hose. I put the big bottle on a table upside down, pull the release on the 1lb bottle with a pair of needle nose to bleed it completely off, then hook it up and fill. You want liquid, not vapor off the top. The right level can be tricky, I hold it at a 45, pull the release with pliers, and go until it starts spitting at the release. Obviously wear gloves and don’t work near anything that can spark. I use my sausage making scale to weigh them since I can tare it with an empty bottle, if it’s over 1lb I bleed it so there’s no issues with bulging. It’ll feel about half full of liquid when done right.

I ended up getting the flame king setup. The stand looks a bit suspect but the bottles are designed to be refilled. Maybe no different than others, we shall see. Spent $100 on all but bought some throw away ones today and price is $5 per. Will pay for itself quickly as we use the little bottles all the time.

Appreciate the input from all.

I use one similar to redbeer’s post. Works really well. Use a forceps to vent the 1lb bottles.

Yes I do it with good success. I use a 5 gallon tank and have the short adapter that I bought off of Amazon for $12.

Make sure the 5 gallon tank is at least 75 degrees. Preferably warmer up to 90 degrees.

Freeze the 1 lb tank in the freezer for a couple of hours.

Turn 5 gallon tank upside down and get small can out the freezer and screw into the adapter and open the valve. You can hear the gas flowing. I leave it until I no longer hear flow and shut the valve. I've weighed the small bottle after and it gets to 14 or 15 oz. Close enough for me.

I do it frequently. I have a dozen canisters and refill them as needed. It's not a big deal. I have the adapter and all you have to do is connect the canister to the 20 lb tank, turn it on and turn the tank upside down for 1-2 minutes. Turn off the tank, remove the canister and repeat. Once you figure it out you can do a canister every 90-120 seconds. You can refill a dozen canisters in about 30 minutes if you include beer and piss breaks.

I bought a 10 dollar adapter on Amazon. I put the empty 1 lb cylinders in the fridge for an hour before filling. Attach to your 5 gallon tank, flip it over and turn it on. Leave it sit for a while. I've weighed the tanks before and after, usually get around 14 oz back in it.

Like many I freeze and refill disposable cylinders, but thinking for safety sake I might should invest in the King cylinders. Have about 10 of the disposables on rotation but really only need like 3. Some of them are pushing 20 years old. Usually they are being transported in open environments like in the back of a truck but occasionally they find their way in to an suv.

Serious question, are the transport concerns for inside of the truck cab (hooked up to a buddy heater/CO poisoning) or rupturing in an accident and exploding?

If you overfill cold then the bottle warms up it will expand and leak. Can happen slow or very quick, depending on what kind of shape the pressure release is in. Just don’t want it in an enclosed space with you when that happens.

The reason I went with the refillable cylinders is that we were using them at the sporting events for the kids. I didn’t want anything remotely possible to happen. A refilled disposable is not legal to transport - I think that is bs, but it is what it is. How they would know?

I’m not saying anything is wrong with refilling the disposables and you could save a ton of money going that route, I just didn’t want to do it. I hook up a cylinder, open the bleeder and fill until it spits LP. Done.

Tigerswillprevail…I purposely broke off the little line up pin on the supply valve where it connects to the 1lb cylinder to make it easier to thread it on. You’ll see what I’m talking about when you get it.
