Glenn Harris: As most people living in this area know, Ruston has a healthy population of deer, including some really big bucks. After one of the bucks was taken by a bow hunter last week, questions arise as to special rules and regulations for hunting "urban" deer.

Anyone heard this ?

Someone showed me this picture yesterday. He said something about there being a small controversy surrounding the deer, which there is a lot of times when big deer are involved whether due to truth or jealousy. Something about the deer being killed behind Walmart where there is a mix of no-hunting land and a small plot of land that can be hunted? As you can tell from my well written and detail filled story, he wasn’t very clear on it.

I worked in ruston for a few years and was there 5 days a week. there are pockets of woods all over the place that hold pretty big deer. I know that patch of woods behind wal-mart. I would park my truck near there and watch the deer moving in the area. A 181 is more than I would have expected, but there were definitely big deer in the area.

There's a small Sears store back behind Walmart on one of the side streets, apparently it was between there and Lowe's. There's homes within 150-200 yards

Several people in the area knew the buck and part of the controversy is he seemed 1/2 tame due to interaction with humans on nearly a daily basis.

That being said I don't blame the hunter, it was legal.

Yeah, we used to ride behind Walmart and could see deer feeding on corn they'd thrown out. Way before all the new development.

Good for him.

The only thing I know (or knew) about Ruston was Rabb’s from my days at Northeast.

I can vouch for the deer within city limits in Ruston. Lived there for 7 years and still have family and good friends who live there.

My buddy told me the controversy was surrounding the piece of land it was actually killed on. Apparently this deer was well known and there are a lot of velvet photos (not trail cam) of him this summer. Obviously there were a lot of hunters trying to get permission to hunt him but they were all allegedly denied permission.

Last I heard, it was still unclear whether or not the hunter was hunting on land that he either owned or had permission to hunt

I grew up in Ruston and there are good size deer all over the place there. I still have a place to hunt but never can make it back over

Google urban hunting in Atlanta. My brother does it and the pictures he sends me of deer he sees is incredible. Consistently sees 180+.

Here’s some of the pics. They see/kill these in people’s backyards. It’s pretty funny when he sends me pictures of him hunting out of a little kids tree house.

Had a couple of buddies rent the place behind it. It was an old restaurant converted to a house. Think nearly 30ac with it. Owner told them he didn't care if we hunted.

We probably only took 15 over the 3yrs they rented it. Never saw the big bucks during daylight hrs. We always hunted legally also.
