I have the Savage with the Sweet 17 scope. It is badass if you know the distance.
Squirrels out at 50-100 yards barking at you because they think they're safe has died due to impact to head.

Me too. i've found the FMJ bullet groups best, and is best on game. Doesn't blow up on contact like the ballistic tip or hollowpoint.
given the weight of the bullet, i think 200 yds is a bit far. Tiny bullet too easily affected by wind.

Killed a yote at 225 yrds last year but no wind.

I also have the Savage .17 with the Sweet 17 scope. By far the most fun to shoot out of all of my guns. 200 yards is probably a stretch, but at 100 yards, with no wind, you can put that little pissant bullet anywhere you want! I love going out back at night and calling in coyotes. I have never shot at one over 60-65 yards but only because the bullet loses so much energy at longer ranges. At 60 though, it drops 'em in their tracks (if you do your part).

My buddy very consistently hits coke cans with his henry .17 with a 3-9 simmons on it. I'm sure 200 is easily attainable on a calm day. That little thing scoots. He's hit bottles a 300 with it, but other than a 3 in a row string hits are sporadic at that range.

Really want to get a 204 for yotes but thinking of getting a 17 to save $. Anyone know of any good but cheaper rifles that come in 204? Savages cheapest one is almost 600.

It'll kill em for sure & you'll probably find other stuff to shoot also.

Well this looks like a savage thread ,but i have a question about the savage have they improved that fricken clip release! If they have not you may want to consider the marlin !

I've got an unshot Mossberg. Doesn't seem up to the quality of the Savage, but I couldn't beat the free price. Haven't glassed it yet so I haven't shot it

TexasTiger34,
Good choice on the Savage bolt action 17 HMR. Although I don't have a 17 HMR, I do have a Savage 17 Mach 2. I've been very pleased w/ it. I'll probably by a 17 HMR in next few weeks for my son; I expect it to be a Savage. Personally, I'd get the model w/ the plain jane synthetic stock and blued bull barrel. Use the $$ you save to buy more ammo. Be sure and try different brands of ammo as rimfires are often picky about ammo types.
Re: scopes, although I don't have any personal experience w/ Barska scopes, I've read so many bad reports from others on the 'net that I've not been able to make myself buy one. The only BSA scope I have is for an air rifle; I guess it's been ok. For the guys w/ the "Sweet 17", is it available w/ the mil-dot reticle? On my M2, I have a Mueller ATV that is similar to this Mueller APV. I'll probably buy another Mueller of some sort for the 17 HMR. Mueller has a very strong following here:

The Savage magazine release is pretty rinky-dink but I can live with it. When I get in my ground blind, I usually have 1 loaded mag and no reloads so it's not like I am changing magazines a lot so it not that big a deal to me. I do wish they would reengineer it though, it is the only weak point on the rifle.

bbvdd, so yours is the stainless steel bull barrel with synthetic stock right?
That's the 93R17 FVSSS, where'd you find it? I can't find it anywhere in stores.
I did find the wooden pistol grip stainless bull barrel one at academy last night for $379 and had a hard time not pulling the trigger. Only thing holding me back was how heavy it felt and realizing I'd be using it for offhand varmint shooting.

Are the Sweet 22 scopes by BSA as good as the Sweet 17's. Is it worth $50 to get the sweet 22 for my 22 rifle???
Posted on 4/5/12 at 4:27 pm to LSU_Lou
I'm wondering what the difference between the "sweet 17" or "sweet 20" scopes is between the regular BSA 4-12x40 is as well. I saw one made by BSA last night at academy that didn't say "sweet 17" on it and wondered what the difference was.

I think that the biggest dfference between the Sweet 17 and any other BSA scope is that the Sweet 17 is calibrated for the trajectory of the .17 round. In theory, once zeroed, you can simply turn the elevation knob on the scope to match whatever distance you are shooting and the scope will compensate for bullet drop and eliminate the guesswork at differing ranges. I have never tried it with mine, I simply zeroed at 100 yards and adjust accordingly for my 50-60 yard typical shots.

Sorry to take so long to respond. Yes, that's it. I've had it for a couple of years. One of my best friends has a shop in NE MS and he got it for me.
