I haven't been hunting for tree rats in years, so please help me out here.

My 14 year old has never shown an interest in my fishing addiction, but suddenly wants to go squirrel hunting. I have him taking the Hunter's Ed online course right now, then off to the WLF range day.

We probably won't be ready to hunt until mid-November.

What's the best WMA to visit for a decent squirrel population and not interfere with any deer hunters at the start of the season?

ETA: We're in the Baton Rouge/Ascension area.

Try to pick on areas with no vehicles parked but I wouldn't worry about squirrel hunting during deer season. It's squirrel season, too. I've had squirrel hunters push deer to me more than I've had them ruin a hunt. A lot of WMAs have their rifle seasons in November so be sure to check in to that. I stay out of them during rifle and I know of a few that close all other seasons down during it. Not sure about the ones I don't hunt.

I do well with the squirrels at Yancy, Sherburne, Tunica Hills, Cat Island, and Tensas/Big Lake.

Bonnett Carre has a good population of squirrels. Pretty easy hunting if you have a boat.

Indian Bayou USCE is right across the Atchafalaya river between Krotz Springs and Butte LaRose. You don't need a boat and plenty of squirrels.

On your side of the river is Sherburne and has plenty there too. No boat required but a 4 wheeler would help at any location.

I've hunted Indian Bayou and Shurburne. Both are loaded. Make sure you have mosquito spray before you go.

I squirrel hunt a lot in Bogue Chitto nwr, which isn't too far out of the question from BR. Do really well in there. I mainly hunt the few areas on the MS side of the river as I live in Picayune and am a MS resident, but there are some good easy walk in areas on the LA side off of the old lock canals.
I've yet to ever see a person squirrel hunting on the MS side in about 8 years of hunting in there, and have only ever run into one bow hunter during bow season for deer.

I've never deer hunted it. See plenty deer in it by boat when frogging at night. I live in Picayune and regularly travel i59, there are a handful of the same regulars that put in at the same spots each yeah, but there is not much pressure though that stretch.
Bogua Chitto on thr LA side of the river north of there is open for the whole season to bow hunting. The two rifle a primitive weapon seasons do see a good bit of hunters, but you pretty much have the whole thing to yourself the rest of the season ams there is some outstanding hunting in there

I hunted Beouf WMA Saturday and it sounded like opening of dove season. At 0930, all fell silent. They must have killed them all...wink..grin.

As dry as its been, hunt areas near watet. Creeks, river hills, etc. Wear snake boots.
