I’m pretty sure it’s not an owl. Only reason I’m not 100% sure it’s not an owl is because I haven’t seen the bird that is making the sound. But, if it’s an owl it sounds nothing like your normal owl sounds. I would believe I would have heard an owl make it before while turkey hunting.

As crazy as it sounds, the closest comparison I can think of would be a loon. The calls of a loon are way longer and deeper though. The first note of a loon call is as close as I can describe it. I’ll try to get audio this week.

Loon was another guess but you would have to be near a pretty big body of water for that. And they are calling right now on the large lakes

Great Horned can sound very different from Barred. Much softer. I had one hooting in my neighbor's tree for weeks, and I never saw it. Always at night.

I checked and it’s not a great horned owl. I don’t think it is a loon either.

Loons don't live in the woods.

Reb, thanks for the discussion and being on the lookout.

As for the mysterious bird call, try Pied-billed Grebe. Here's a link, but they don't always go through the whole sequence.

Dammit missed where you said "always near water".

You are most welcome, Reb. I was shocked the first time I heard one. That's a loud sound to come out of a small bird!

Not worth it. As soon as I report one, I lose all hunting rights. State/Feds will come in and that will be it....Just going to sit back and just watch them drill the trees around my deer stand, and just let the world wonder......

The amount of "effort" it takes to find Ivory-bills is much greater than that with most other birds. A search for Ivory-bills for less than a month in a particular location would not necessarily detect Ivory-bills that are present.
This will never not be funny

Makes me wonder how much money and time have been wasted looking for Bigfoot.
