Hardwood bottom on a creek

I hate being in the woods with a heavy fog drip. It’s like a light sprinkle. Always thought deer hated moving in this or rain in past experiences. Too noisy for them. Never seen deer unless in the open : field or pipeline.

But I can’t say enough good things about the Vanguards.
That’s what I had, and sold. A vanguard S2 257wby. It was extremely accurate.
I’m just a big fan of proof research carbon wrapped barrels, which is why I like the mark v. Paired with a titanium action, that’s one sexy rifle.
My 28 nosler is a nosler m48 action, carbon fiber manners stock and proof research carbon barrel. After owning this rifle, I don’t think I’ll ever buy another one without a carbon wrapped barrel.

Pretty day here... Which means I wouldn't have seen jack if I went out. Kinda half working and hanging with family today, but I'm hitting the woods tomorrow morning again. Hope to see pics in this thread soon.

3 bucks chasing a single doe
Hunted Big Rack several years ago and saw five after one. The last one didn’t make it.
You don’t see that kind of stuff in pine thickets.

It just got re-foggy again. Worse than this morning.

I went scout the other day after my hunt. Found some really good stuff. Put cameras out. Moved one into a nice spot yesterday. Already had an 8 point and some does in the area. Won't be back for 10 days so they have time.

Damn near got plowed over yesterday on Tensas by a 2.5 yo (best guess) buck chasing two does. Was putting my climber on the tree and they came crashing through palmetto right towards me, veering at last second. Not gonna lie, it got my blood pumping. He was young but studly.

Reading this as I’m ducked behind palmettos letting a yearling feed through at 20 yards lol

Good luck, I was up in my climber yesterday pissed off that I wasn’t in my tree earlier (stayed in to take care of sick wife, got to tree at 7 am) when I saw that pic of your buck. My adrenaline was still pumping when I saw your pic!
Funny part is when I was putting up my climber, I heard what I thought was a doe blow twice… I shrugged it off and went back to my assembly. Then I heard all the crashing and out they popped three of them running straight for me haha. My bow and release were on the ground and my climber was in my hand… FML!!
FWIW I was up on north part of refuge. For anyone reading this, I can confirm… the rut is ON!!

My first bird

Nice! But confusing, because I can't go looking for turkeys here until April.

Everything I have are custom built rifles by Jon Beanland out of Oklahoma. I bought the fierce on a whim and that dude will shoot 3 in dang near the same hole. I’ve been really impressed with it.

I disagree with shooting turkeys in the fall. The wild turkey is struggling as it is and it doesn’t make much sense to let people shoot them over corn with a rifle in the fall.
I’m glad u got you a bird but that is not turkey hunting my friend. It will make every hair on your body stand up when that big joker is gobbling and coming in on a string!

Beautiful bird buddy. Now wait until you eat it! I think that fried Turkey biscuit I had for breakfast inspired you.

Rio Grande turkeys in South Texas are not struggling. No coons to mess with their eggs and aggressive control of ‘Yotes on most ranches, populations are quite healthy. I counted 75-80 hens at one time on more than one hunt a few weeks ago.
I can concur with the part about calling them in during the Spring, it’s definitely more exciting, but I sure have enjoyed eating those fresh breasts from my trip. And FWIW, I’ve never shot a Turkey with a rifle, only a 12 gauge, so it’s still up close and personal.

You owe it to yourself to hunt turkeys in the spring. With a bit of luck, you’ll have a conversation with a Tom. That’s a whole other world than shooting them with a 7 mag. You were legal, and that’s the most important thing. But working a bird in the spring is one of the top hunting experiences one can have. Shooting them with a rifle in the winter is cheating the bird, yourself, and the sport of turkey hunting. Understand that most posters on here hunt in states where fall hunting is illegal. Where it is legal, the method of hunting is to bust up a flock and call them in. Obviously, Texas is different and with a corn feeder and rifle.
