Let's get this show on the road! America's chance to make it to a medal match for the first time in...a long time (couldn't find the exact date, but it's been decades) starts in less than 5 minutes!

crazy with how many soccer moms there are in america that we still can't field a team of Braydens Braxtons and Hunters that can beat Morocco

Braxton also plays Baseball and Football and basketball and goes to High School and prom and maybe he goes to college
Muhammad Morocco plays soccer and that is it, and if he's good enough goes pro at 12

best US athletes still play basketball, baseball, football. None of those sports lose their best to soccer. It is what it is.

The U.S. soccer team doesn’t have an athleticism problem. It never has. The best soccer player ever is 5’7”.
It has a skill problem.

This statement is a half truth. It's not possible to develop Messi level skill when your athletes capable of developing that skill are playing other sports their whole childhood. My daughter plays competitive soccer on an "elite" team. Half the kids on the team are average or below athletes when compared to kids in the rec basketball league she plays in. There are kids in the rec basketball league who would wreck the "elite" soccer team if they played soccer for a few years. I realize that the USMNT are all elite athletes and have no athleticism gap with other teams, but they simply aren't the best athletes that the US can field if the entire population cared about soccer more than football and basketball.

So what’s your point? If the best athletes in the U.S. grew up playing soccer, we’d still lose unless they moved to Europe to train as preteens. They aren’t going to outrun the ball.
The U.S. system does not consistently develop skill in its athletes well. We’re elite at “off the bus” sports - track, swimming, basketball, football, but not skill sports on the men’s side.
That’s not to say our system is worse. I’m glad I got to play organized football, tennis, soccer, and more growing up. That doesn’t happen often abroad.
Even in basketball, other countries produce more skilled players than us, but you can out athlete skill in basketball.

My point is that the sport simply isn't popular enough in the US to get the best athletes to commit to it as a sole sport when they are teens. Just because the USMNT are great athletes doesn't mean they are the best soccer players that our country can produce. They're likely playing other sports. Look at tennis. Why did we dominate the sport for decades and now can't win a slam at all?

Maybe this is the answer to why we don't develop "skill" in one sport?
