I’m sure this is a dumb question but I don’t understand the pace decisions people make on something like the 1500. If you’re the best, it seems like you would just run your own race and put down your time basically.

You have to be incredible to time trial every event. David Rudisha of Kenya did that in the 800 and is widely considered the greatest 800 guy ever, as good as Bolt in the 100-200 if not for car accidents.
