Turns out US championships in some sports award Pewter Medal for 4th place. Figure skating has done this since 1988, so it is legit and not a participation trophy. With how good these athletes are, why not have a 4th place medal in olympics. Before people freak out, just 4th, seems like a good idea. Id support it, if youre 4th in the world, a medal is a fair reward.

Why not award First Place only. It would save time and the expense of making the other medals.
It's how sports championships are remembered.

Why stop at 4th? If your the 5th best in the world at something you deserve to be recognized. It can be stainless steel.

Then I just feel bad for the 6th place person. Surely if you're the 6th best in the entire world at something you have earned a reward. Maybe this one can be aluminum.

But at this point the 7th place person is just getting fricked. You're the SEVENTH BEST IN THE ENTIRE WORLD! I would propose a medal carved out of a rich olive wood.

This site gets so weird sometimes. I answered this type of ridiculousness by showing that there is a long history of a 4th place Pewter Medal.

Unfortunately the overwhelming majority of the vocal shitheads in this country don't know that, and frankly wouldn't care. We live in an age of irrationalism. People as a group aren't looking through a lens of logic or realism. They look through the lens of their feelings as a primary driver of decision and action.

This just opens another slippery slope, and you can bet your arse the rediculousness I previously posted would be coming right down the pipe.

Bronze medal games are much more interesting because a medal is on the line.

There's an even longer history of 4th place not getting shite. Like almost an entire century longer you found a recent irregularity that happens in 1 place.

I just don’t think there’s much public clamoring for a 4th place Olympics medal regardless of other sports. Too much tradition in just having the three. Plus it would cheapen the stakes of the bronze medal games.
