I’m pissed. Win 3 games then lose 1 and you’re out. Lose 3 games then win 2 and you’re in the semis.

Makes no sense.

Well, after reading the last few pages, it sounds like I should be glad I missed this game. Couldn't convert and the Slovaks just outplayed them? That sucks to hear.

I guess age and experience still beats youth and enthusiasm. I kinda had that concern when USA Hockey threw this roster together. But what do I know? They’re the ones with the trophy case full of gold medals!

Canada not looking the best against Sweden right now. Maybe we just had a weak pool.

Sweden might actually be good—so hard to tell this tournament. Teams can also gel and improve dramatically over a short period like Slovakia did. But I think you’re right—our strong showing in group play was likely the result of weak/incomplete opposition.

Canada blows it on a brutal turnover, then gives up an empty-netter, so no team from our group made the semis.
This tournament is such a weak version of what Olympic hockey used to be—with NHL stars and packed arenas. Now it’s just the KHL all-star game.

Yep, no team in our pool beat a team outside our pool. Looks like that 3-0 #1 seed was fool's gold.

I'm not surprised at the NA teams showings since both the USA and Canada are fielding teams with a combo of young players and guys past their primes.

Canada is going to howl now. This may as good as wjen Gretzky failed to make the medal round and Toronto Sun bashed him.

Good for Sweden.

So it is what it used to be is what youre saying and you do not like it?

I actually would rather have the non NHL guys playing. the 80's-94 tournaments were great. You had NHL future All Stars all over every roster. They need to cap the age at 22.

This was basically a IIHF World Championship summer tournament.

What needs to happen is Gary B needs to give up the World Cup and let Canada restart the Canada Cup and Rendevous. Then let the Canadians incorporate some American sites into it like they had done for the NHL guys. Those were played in late August right before training camps and it got fiesty and intense. Much more intense than Olympic Hockey, as they used NHL rules

I liked it best when you had the best players in the world playing their best hockey. Every game was an NHL playoff game with All-Star players, on a big enough sheet where they could wheel. ‘02 Salt Lake, ‘10 Vancouver were amazing.
This tournament is just about who has the best scrubs. North America is at a disadvantage because even our non-elite talent can still make a NHL roster. The European leagues that shut down gives those teams an advantage. Probably why neither North American team made the semis.
Either make it all amateurs (like Team USA tried this time) or the best professionals. But this tournament is the worst of both worlds.

I was hoping that it would be like that tournament but NHL players participate in that, too. Don't they? The quality doesn't seem on par TBH.

They do, but it is usually lower tier guys. You some times get a Kane or Crosby type show up for a game or so. Russia usually can get their guys to play.

I think the IIHF tournament is not good, because the guys really don't play hard in it until the semis.

Of course not happy with a USA loss but feel like the shootout format is outdated to determine a winner beyond pro leagues doing it individually. Hated it during the Canada-US juniors a few years back, even though the US won.

That said, if the Olympics continue without NHL players the rosters should consist of under-25s or else you end up with a variety of teams plucking guys from the free agent scrap heap who may have some gas left in the tank, or a Chelios representing China. The Olympics version is basically a "B league" version of the world championships every year.

To me this would be the best way to hold the Olympics

12 teams all U 23 with 1 guy of older age, like soccer does.

two pools A/B with 5 games with 3, 1, 0 scoring

Seed the top 3 of each pool and have GD get you in for 7 and 8 seeds. It forces you to score.

The each team that makes the qtrs plays 3 games in tournament form

For the NHL/Canada Cup You have 16 teams, play 4 pools, put the top 4 ranked teams in separate pools blind draw it and go. Anyone is eligible to play. Or here is an idea

Make it like the McDonald's Cup did in Basketball. Each league sends a team

KHL
NHL
AHL
ECHL
etc

WTF a 3-1 team should still be in medal contention. I say challenge the whole podium.
