i think you answered your own question
42,000gal >>> 1000bbl in their minds

I think that the general public can relate to gallons better than they can to barrels.

Or maybe because everybody knows how big a gallon is?

Posted on 6/9/10 at 8:07 am to diat150
yeah, I think it should be reported in quarts.

Because that's how we purchase the gas.

but the oil produced and sold goes by the barrel.

not to us.

Mostly because of the shock value of the number.
Oil is generally discussed as how many barrels. When the nation is updated about how much oil we have in our strategic petroleum reserve, it is mentioned in barrels.
The price of oil is measured in barrels. When talking about how much a ship can old, it is spoke of in barrels. When we are talking about how much oil a new well discovery may contain, it is done in barrels.
And screw it if I am not spelling correctly.

I think it's a little bit of sensationalism and a little bit of "the public doesn't know how much a barrel is".
Then again, I don't think the public OR oil field folks can wrap their heads around how much 620,000 gal/day is, even if it IS in a commonly used unit of measure.
It's like your water usage on your bill each month being reported in teaspoons.

And none of these conversations involves the general public, where this information is intended.
I doubt if it is shock value, but who gives a damn if it is.
I personally think they should just say "still got a shite ton of oil spilling out today" cause really, not one son of a bitch has been truthful or accurate in this process so why keep guessing or lying? Whichever is the case.

I am sure that is a little of the reason.

aside from the people on this board and those in the industry I would venture to say if given a multiple choice question of How many gallons in a barrel ?
a)35
b)42
c)55
at least half the people would get it wrong, so by reporting in gallons most people would have some grasp, I also agree that the shock of a bigger number plays into it as well.
I am going to ask everyone in my office the above question and report back

Does anyone else know the history behind why it is now 42 gallons?

Just not a PETROLEUM barrel.

I believe they were old, used liquor barrels. Can't remember, though.
