What happens if the relief well is in process of being drilled and

then this dome thing works? Does drilling of the relief well continue to hopefully permanently fix the leak? And who is drilling the relief well???

They still have to get the well under control and STOP the flow. I'm pretty sure a relief well is required, no matter what.

The dome thing is a temporary fix. The relief well will have to be drilled to fully control the well.
The well will be drilled by bp with the DD3 rig I believe. It's either the DD1 or DD3. But there are several other companies working with bp to get this solved. We even have one of our top dogs from here helping them in their "war room".

the relief well would allow BP to actually make good use of the oil.
The cap is just to control the flow.

Wrong. The relief well is drilled to relieve the pressure in the flowing well and then to plug it permanently. They arent going to be producing oil out of the relief well.

I would think at some point they will be drilling another hole to put this find into production. Any idea how far down the road this will be?

At least a couple years down the road i would think. They still need to clean up the mess and do development studies before they bring a platform back out there.

That is a shame as I heard it was a pretty substantial oil pocket.

Tens of millions of reserves was BPs estimate. Decent field for sure but not a giant one by any means. Most of the big discoveries in the deepwater are over 100 million EUR.

the formation may end up being uneconomic for a couple of reasons: the loss of recoverable volume due to the period of uncontrolled flow, potential formation damage due to uncontrolled flow (like taking the reservoir beneath bubble point).
all depends on when they get the original well killed.
