This is the only way the clean up will work effectively is if the local people that know the area are in charge. The feds and BP will just mess around till its all to late.

I think this was only a matter of time. If the Federal government doesn't come down on them like the wrath of God, look for more locals to start doing this as well.

If the Federal government does come down on them, look for a GIANT public backlash.

I'm of the belief that if this community is successful, they will be the first domino in a loooong line that will eventually lead to states doing the same thing.

Buddy of mine is working clean-up. He says that they lack understanding of the area and organization throughout a large part of the "hierarchy."

They don't have the authority to do this, and if they continue with their misguided shenanigans, they will be arrested or tried with criminal charges that break the law.

I might not like that if I go over 70 mph on the freeway that I might get a ticket. But if I get caught, I still have to pay.

I might not like that I can't walk into Target and take whatever I like without paying for it. I'd be charged with theft.

Either you follow the law or go to jail.

Way to go Okaloosa!

Comparing a county's actions to clean up an oil spill while the feds sit back and watch doesn't compare to theft or speeding at all.

It would be a terrible career move for the prosecuting US attorney, and if given the option of a jury trial the offenders would likely walk. My bet is they clean up their own back yard and are better off for it.

Hooray for personal responsibility!

Some small town in Mississippi doing the same thing to protect a bay or the like ... they said they're doing it now and will ask for forgiveness later
