I recall hearing something about the unique nature of it too.

It was unique in that it was a DW MODU equipped to drill in several thousand ft of water. Those TYPES of rigs are unique relative to your typical land-based drilling rig.

However, there are scores..maybe 100+ of this general "type" of rig in the world. I would venture to say probably 25 or so with these capabilities.

my friend said something about the only thing being in their favor when breaking down the oil was that the bacteria will be stronger in the warm water as compared to alaska. how big of a difference will this make environmentally speaking?

The only thing that I have heard is that this oil is almost as thick as asphalt in some areas and in some others is fairly light. The thick shite wont break apart.

any guess on how long this will impact us. i mean is this a disaster that will take years to fix or will next year be back to normal? You guys seem to be the experts on crude here...

This is a good point.

ExxonValdez oil, if I recall, had already had the light ends removed from it, and was en route to be refined. So that tanker was full of the REALLY REALLY bad shite that was like asphalt.

This has a lot of that, but it's also still rife with light ends and natural gas...both of which will evaporate or easily burn off.

Not that that makes this any less of a catastrophe.

And to answer a question from earlier: It is possible that a DW well could produce 40,000 BOPD, but that would be one HELL of a barn-burner. Normally a GREAT DW well will produce at 25K/day initially.

Of course...that is under controlled conditions....

If it's spewing 40,000 BOPD, uncontrolled, for the next 30-60 days (the time it would take...minimum...to isolate the zone with a relief well), you're looking at decades of impact.

Of course, it'll be like Katrina. The impact will be devastating inthe first few years/decade, but will quickly reduce to manageable.
