from where?

The presser was carried live from MSNBC.com. The Coasties said the second leak was at the rig location on the ocean floor. Meaning oil was coming out of the BOP on the floor (one spill) and out of the top of whatever was left of the pipe, plus probably a few other places along the way.

Exxon Valdez was 1989. FYI those fisherman still haven't seen a dime from that class action suit....and it has been to the US Supreme court twice.

for the most part that is true. my friends parents own a house that was affected. they received clean up money, but no money for damages or compensation for decreased property values.

Is that possible? I don't know much about off shore rigs. Can a rig even put out 40,000 bbls/day?

How exactly will all this electricity be produced?

Hydro (dams have already killed most of the anadromous fisheries in the west) and Coal. Coal spills are very easy to clean up (we had one in town the other day). Still not great for the environment.

Yes, down is easy. Gravity does most of the work. Up is a little harder.

How will the ethanol be produced-electric powered farm equipment? Mules?

Electric is a good option. Doesn't work for fertilizer, though. We'll have to be creative on that one. Americans are pretty good at that shite.

Someday you and the rest of the anti-progress crowd will get on board. This spill will probably be the first step for a lot of people. And everyone who works in the oil and gas sector can come along. You won't make as much money, but your specks and reds won't come up with a nice sheen, and won't taste like Baytown either.

He better have meant gallons, or the shrimp, oysters, and expensive beachfront property are the least of our worries...

Jesus. I thought this oil spill thing was blown out of porportion, but now it appears (by numbers) to be worse than the Exxon Valdez incident which was a huge deal back in the day.

If it is only 5,000 bbls, it will pass it in 52 days.

this was one of the first rigs of its kind as far as depth goes. the reason it blew was bc they probably did not have enough knowledge about how pressurized it was. its not a stretch to have that much oil coming out of it.
