The riser is cut. They're likely working through the drill pipe inside now.

This may be a retard question, but if they have a tool powerful enough to cug through the riser, why cant they just crimp it to slow the flow?

I'm looking at the top of BOP feed now. Is it just me or has the flow increased due to the possible increase in pressure from the shear cutting down on the riser.

Back about 10 pages ago some of the oil field guys talked about this. You could crimp it, but then pressure would build and then you would have an oil bomb go off. Bad. Very, very bad it turns out.

Ok...help me understand something. At the top of the BOP isn't the riser bent and leaking. The cut that just occurred appears to be further "up" the riser.

Are they going to cap it at the cut? What about the leaking at the bend?

I watched them lock on at 0430 this am. I believe it is already in place....how long you think til they cut though..

No - they will cap it at the BOP. They are just removing the riser bit by bit...

Think of when you cut a huge branch out of a tree - working in to the trunk of the tree to prevent damage or collapse.
