Ok...help me understand something. At the top of the BOP isn't the riser bent and leaking. The cut that just occurred appears to be further "up" the riser.
Are they going to cap it at the cut? What about the leaking at the bend?
They aren't going to cap it at all. They will make a cut below the bent riser and hope to get another riser attached to it that will allow them to divert the flow of oil to a rig up top.

Check this link out--click on the pictures and it should clear some things up:

Wow the flow coming out of the kink is impressive now. Overall mass flow is probably the same but more flow coming out near the kink now it seems.

i wish they would cut now!

I bet the Discover Enterprise already has her riser lowered with the LMRP too. Once the cut is made and the riser is clear they will immediately begin navigating over the BOP for latch up.

Isn't the LMRP already on the floor in a basket?

I assumed it was attached to the bottom of the Enterprise's riser.

Anyone know why they can't just unbolt that riser ?

what is it's function? Just out of curiosity.

It would be pretty difficult operating hydraulic hammer wrenches with the ROVs.

To determine if the BOP and wellhead are level.

Are they gonna cut the heads off the flange bolts?
Posted on 6/1/10 at 7:51 pm to TexTiga
My guess from watching this thing online for 10 days would be that once you unbolt it, how do you ever "see" to bolt a new one? Oil goes everywhere and there is no vision. Just look at the flow 2 or so feet above the diamond cut.
Easier to cut and lower and hope to create an effective seal for pumping and collection.

Figured there had to be a good reason.

What I just said about visibility and the hydraulic wrenching thing that redstick said.
In fact, listen to him more than me.
Seriously.
