Somebody earlier suggested a mile long fabric/plastic tube that could be cinched off at the bottom. My 1st thought was, that's a lot of blue tarp.

What about using hot air balloons sewn together to make a tube? It's not going to be under pressure, all it has to do is direct the oil to the surface.

probably shaving off edges where the shears made them wider when pinching it.

No lie. And to top it off they are down to the short strokes and waiting on the ROV operator to make one cut that is kinda like shooting backwards looking in a mirror on a running horse.

Pumping mud?

They are cleanning up the riser cut to allow better fit up of the "top hat".

why don't they push some of the oil away from the cut area so the operator can see?

From the pics that BP put out, that looks like the end of the top hat that will sit on the riser pipe.

Those must be the methanol "heater" pipes to control hydrate formation.

An aside. Yesterday I was dumping calcium chloride in my pool to raise the calcium hardness. I didn't want to just dump it because it may harm the liner, so I filled a red solo full and filled with water to dissolve.

It was amazing the amount of heat generated in that cup.
