thanks, but I think the question does have some merit.
It seems like the BOP is designed to seal/crimp when there is pipe in the BOP. Now if there is some pipe still in the BOP which would interfere with the operation of the valve then put the valve below the rams and design the upper portion of the BOP to detach, thus exposing the pipe joint obstructing the valve...then grab the pipe, lift it up, cut it, let it go south...then close the damn valve.

seems like that value is jumping all over the place...from 3000+ to 1000+

no, look at the video, its not too bad of a cut

With a ball valve? Uh huh.
then install a needle valve

if they could get some type of valve on there, I imagine a gate valve would be better

No. 1 meter is about 3.3 feet
So 3000 meters would be 9900'.
Conversely, 1000' is only 300 meters.

right, it doesn't compute, but a better example would have been:
1047 meters = 3435.03937 feet
1047 meters = 3435.03937 feet

Sorry...

great...it seems like the BOP is designed to prevent a blowout (well, duh) but when you are now dealing with a blowout...I can't believe that the system isn't valved for the occasion when the rams fail

maybe its too much pressure, you would think they had some sort of way to manually close some of the rams, maybe they do but it is broke I dunno

Why are they making a vertical cut on the riser now? Only thing I can think is they're cutting a wedge so they can try and compress the opening a few inches.
Posted on 6/3/10 at 10:57 am to Schwartz
making the cut smoother for some reason
Posted on 6/3/10 at 10:58 am to LEASTBAY
Yeah but they're making a vertical cut on the low side...wouldn't make the cut any smoother.

Are they maybe trying to cut the riser away from the drill pipe for some reason?

I think you need to be looking at the DPT number, at least on most of the ROV's. Like the Intervention III ROVII

looks like some kind of fitting still left on the pipe stem that they are trying to remove to allow the next apparatus to go down over the stem, imo

cutting a gusset off that they couid not get to under the bent riser

Edit: Nevermind. Couldn't see an obstruction from the angle I was watching.

Yeah, I see it now, too. That makes more sense than what I was thinking anyway.
