I'm not sure but they zoomed in close just now and there was no visible cutting device around the bolts on top the flange. So they are either cutting through where the flanges mate up, below the flanges, or the cutting device isn't active yet.
The black band they are showing now--that's the cutting device right? Doesn't look like it's running.

Ah ha! There it is and it is above the flange. It looks like a band saw. They haven't started yet.

I was not much of a Math student or much at engineering, but what a huge challenge. Nightmarish even.
Depth. Water. Pressure. The need to make a seal from something....
How can this work, even if they do get a clean cut? Trying to piece/patch a new "riser" on there?

The label on that large yellow box leaves no question as to what that thing is for.
"CUT"
"CUT"

That's a good question. I'm curious to see how they make a seal too. My best guess is that they will use the enormous weight of the new riser to make a seal. You're talking a few million pounds of weight.

Is it still a few million pounds of weight when it's submerged in water?

these ROV operators will have some cool stories to tell their grandkids.

With flotation assisting devices attached to the outside. I've seen the weight indicator when running riser at this depth and it was reading over 2 million pounds.

Here's a wider shot of what BP is trying to accomplish right now.

Of course that weight I speak of would have included the BOP stack. Still, it should be around 2 million pounds.

The cut will be made above the bolts of the flange. That is how it is lined up now.
I saw them lift the basket with the LMRP a while back. Don't know if it went to the surface. I guess they will need it hooked up to the riser a good bit of the gulf floor, since the BOP is pretty tall.

We have footage on the oceaneering website of some pretty cool search and rescue operations

Looks like they fired it up

Something is going on for sure. Looks like they are moving in to start the cut.
