I had no idea that the water was clear near the seafloor.

I thought that the Gulf of Mexico waters were fairly murky from surface to bottom.
I guess I've spent too much time on and in Lake Ponchartrain and not enough time on and in the Gulf.
Comments on water clarity in the Gulf and Lake?
I assume that Lake P is murky even on near the seafloor?

I swam in Lake Pontch yesterday and was able to see at least 5' down.

the deepwater GOM is pretty clear on bottom until the bottom is disturbed (like by an ROV). then it can take forever to clear up, as the sediment just sort of hangs in the water.

There is a lot of cobalt blue and pretty clear blue/green water the further our you go

Have you never been east of Mississippi? Just axing, not trying to be a smartass. Clarity depends on the amount sediment and mud draining into the water from rivers, and plankton/algae/goo in the water. Get off the beach a ways and its clear as a bell.

the water in the GOM is amazingly blue once you get to the bluewater line. It really is the point at which the river runoffs stop influencing the waters color.

Gulf of Mexico has beautiful water, hence the "emerald waters" of florida and alabama coastlines, not so much around Biloxi though.
Lake Pontchartrain is also very clear, i try to tell people that all the time but few realize just how clear the water is out there since the shell dredging stopped in the early 90's.

I went to the Gulf beach years ago, but I forgot the clarity of the water. My more recent trips to the beach have been to East Coast beaches. My next beach trip will be to a GOM beach in Florida.

The gulf in the bluewater is as pretty as it gets. There are days clouder and then clearer than others. BTW, the lake has been really clean for a few years and you can see about 4 to 5 feet down. It is pretty awesome. We need to keep it that way.

Just drove across the causeway...ton of boats fishing the bridge. Looked very inviting.

I spearfish the rigs in the Venice area, and water clarity is a guessing game unless you have access to satellite images. It's really crazy to dive in a rig and not be able to see your hand in front of your face for the first 10 - 20 feet, then the "murk" will break and you have clean, clear pretty water underneath although somewhat darker because the murk layer also blocks the sunlight. Diving the rigs is awesome as there is so much life and so many fish to look at...everyone should try it!

As long as the BOP is fully functional.
