During the Exxon Valdez spill it cost 90k per animal rescued and cleaned that survived. It's extremely painful for the animals to be cleaned and something like 90% of animals cleaned survived for any amount of time. Many animals activist would think its better to put them down and use the money elsewhere for environmental use.

LSU vet school and various other groups who have been taking care of oiled wildlife, and who have yet to be paid a dime from BP, said a low percentage actually survive

However, BPs antics of getting dead oiled wildlife bagging it and tossing in trash piles to keep the numbers down is irresponsible.

Am I a bad person if I laughed out loud at the thread title when I first saw it?
That is fricked up, though.

I'm actually kinda shocked by the lack of involvement by the traditional Enviro-warrior powers. Where's the PETA and Greenpeace brigade hiding out? They've been AWFULLY quiet through this whole mess... I would think they'd have a whole calendar's worth of photographs by now...
for the reactionaries, its more important and powerful to see Republican governors complaining.

What exactly would you have them do? Bag them and lay them out on the shore so you can know exactly how many have died?
It's just a damn turtle, and, if it's dead or dying, I'd rather them dispose of it.

Not if it's protected it's not.
It is important to get numbers of protected species being impacted.

it was probably people like that fricking idiot that appologized to BP the other day that was on the approval committee.
Don't forget that BP bought Obama as well. They made huge contributions to his campaign fund.
I also blame this government not only for their failure to adequately regulate the rig, but more for their dismal attempt to keep the oil off our shores.

I sent the link to PETAs website contact. Lets see if they respond.

Actually yes, that is a good idea. If they are rare, you can actually cut the eggs out of the dead mother and the young can survive. We have done this with several fresh water species that are endangered. Admittedly, most were with recent roadkills, but DOR (dead on road) and DIW (dead in water) are the same as far as the eggs go. Yeah, pretty gruesome operation though (

That cost/animal goes down with each rescue.

I'd imagine a turtle would be much easier (and likely less painful) to clean than a bird or a jellyfish.

Unless the animals being rescued are facing TOTAL habitat loss and a fast-track to extinction.

I'm sorry but the money should be used for more effective things like schools in Africa or Orleans Parish.

Because saving the world's 6th largest source of income just isn't very important. (Yes - the Gulf of Mexico)
Because you can get shrimp in places besides Louisiana.
Because if we want to see a sea turtle we can go to the zoo.
Because what's a couple of extinct species in the grand scheme of things...
It's called the food chain. Look it up.
FWIW - Orleans Parish still has well over $700+ MILLION in unspent federal Katrina relief money not earmarked for anything in particular.
Imagine how many schools you could build in Africa with that kinda money.

Poor Turtles... I bet they would have never thought they would die by fire.

That pisses me off too.

BP is not cleaning shrimp

Use the money to repopulate the gulf if every sea turtles dies. I'm sure it would be more cost effective.

What species is being cleaned that is going to go extinct? Stop being sensational and use alittle common sense

BP would be toast if 1/2 the stuff made the news. I've been down there a lot and talked to many regarding the cleanup and how things are operating and the very shady practices BP is running.
